Biography

Dr O'Brien is currently the Director (Centre for Distance Learning and School Manager) at UCD College of Business. She joined the Centre for Distance Learning in 2002, after graduating from UCD  Smurfit Graduate School of Business with an MBS in HRM. in 2010, Orna completed her doctorate at University of Edinburgh in the field of tertiary educational policy development (specifically the impact of the Bologna Process on university governance in Ireland). She has also completed a Graduate Diploma in University Teaching and Learning (UCD),  a Certificate in Training and Continuing Education (NUI, Maynooth) and a Certificate in Education Technology (UCD). She is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK).

In addition to her role as Director, Orna is the module coordinator for a number of the undergraduate and postgraduate research modules in Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore and Sri Lanka. She mainly delivers modules in the areas of Human Resource Management and Business Research Methods.

Her areas of research interest include the globalisation of higher education and education policy, elearning, teaching-learning environments for part-time students and development of academic competencies.  In December 2016, she was invited to join the Expert Group for the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education for her work in higher education assessment.

Dr O'Brien was awarded a 'Teaching in Excellence' award by UCD College of Business in 2017. She was further nominated for the overall University award by the College of Business for 'Teaching in Excellence'.

Research Interests

Her areas of research interest include education policy, elearning, online teaching environments, teaching-learning environments for part-time students and development of academic competencies.

 

Recent Postgraduates

2003-present  Bachelor of Business Studies (Part-time) Research Dissertations (20 ECTS): supervised Year 4 students undertaking dissertations on topics including performance management,  diversity management flexible working, recruitment, selection and retention, mentoring, talent management, downsizing and the learning organisation. Module coordinator since 2009

2009/11 Master in Management Major Projects (20 ECTS): supervised Year 2 dissertations on succession planning, recruitment and selection, career and management development, performance management, motivation, effort and performance & reward management.

2011-2012  Master in Management Business Project 1 (7.5 ECTS): supervised Year  students undertaking projects on topics including performance management, downsizing, change and communication, health and safety, outsourcing, rewards, absenteeism, strategy and internationalisation and staff development.

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

Orna works with the School's part-time students on both undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Working with part-time students is an excellent opportunity to explore academic theory in the real business environment. Orna also designs and oversees the research modules on the part-time programmes in Ireland, Hong Kong, Singapore and Sri Lanka.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

Orna has been a leader of the 2016 Curriculum Review and Enhancement (CRE) project for the programmes housed in the Centre for Distance Learning. She has welcomed the opportunity to drive CRE project on the DBS, BBS, BSc and MSc programmes across four locations and ensure a portfolio of strong, quality degree programme offerings.
