Biography

Karan joined University College Dublin in 2009. He earned his PhD from the University of Alberta, Canada. His work has been published in academic journals such as the Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Human Relations, MIT Sloan Management Review, and Organizational Research Methods. Karan's primary research and teaching interests are in the broad areas of the exercise of leadership discretion in the face of competing demands from institutions and stakeholders, behavioural approaches to strategy, managing talent, and managing risk. He is a winner of an Early Career Research Award at UCD, a Professor of the Year Teaching Award at University of Manitoba, Canada and a Teaching Award at University of Alberta, Canada. He has previously held academic appointments at Instituto de Empresa Business School, Spain and University of Manitoba, Canada. Karan served as a Captain in the Indian Military prior to his PhD.

Research Interests

My research mainly focuses on (1) the exercise of leadership discretion in the face of competing demands from institutions and stakeholders, (2) behavioural approaches to strategy, (3) managing talent and performance, (4) the impact of heightened emotional and cognitive states (e.g., dissonance, biases, hubris, envy) in affecting behaviour, and (5) managing risk.
