Biography

A first class honours, first place in class, Science (Microbiology & Biochemistry) graduate of University College Dublin, Prof Niamh Brennan qualified as a chartered accountant with KPMG, holds a PhD from the University of Warwick and more recently qualified as a Chartered Director with the Institute of Directors (London). 

Niamh has published on Financial Reporting, Corporate Governance, Forensic Accounting and Clinic Governance. With 100+ publications, she has a h-index of 15 reflecting 1,700+ Google Scholar citations, including four publications with over 100 citations. One of her papers received the British Accounting Review 2010 Best Paper Award; another the Mary Parker Follett Accounting Auditing and Accountability Journal (AAAJ) 2011 Best Paper Award; Two of her papers are among AAAJ's 24 outstanding articles of the last 25 years; while her article, "Can Directors Rely on Experts?", received the Accountancy Ireland Award for 2011. Her profile can be viewed on Google Scholar and on her SSRN author page.

In a survey of UCD alumni, Niamh was voted one of UCD's top three lecturers for the 2000s onwards. She has served as Chair of the Accounting group and Associate Dean for Research at the UCD School of Business. Niamh has also held visiting positions at the University of Sydney, the University of South Australia, the University of Canterbury at Christchurch, New Zealand, the University of Otago, New Zealand, Queensland University of Technology and the Rotman School of Management, University of Toronto.

Having established the UCD Centre for Corporate Governance in 2002, Niamh plays a leading role in the public discourse in Ireland and internationally on corporate governance. The Centre has provided executive and professional training to thousands of Irish company directors. 
 
A former chairman of the Dublin Docklands Development Authority, Niamh has held non-executive directorships with the Health Service Executive, Ulster Bank, Co-operation Ireland, Coillte (Irish state forestry company) and Lifetime Assurance (Bank of Ireland's life assurance arm). She served on the audit committee of the Department of Agriculture and Food and is former chairman and member of the UCD Audit Committee. Contributing to the work of two professional bodies, Niamh is Chairman of the Committee on Professional Conduct of the Society of Actuaries in Ireland and is a former Member of the Disciplinary Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland. She was appointed by the Minister for Finance to chair the Commission on Financial Management and Control Systems in the Health Services and she was appointed by the Minister for Trade Enterprise and Employment as vice-chairman of the Review Group on Auditing. Niamh has also completed financial reporting, forensic accounting and corporate governance consulting assignments for some of Ireland's leading organisations and has served as expert witness in cases involving financial reporting, forensic accounting and corporate governance issues.
