Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

The Core Principles of my philosophy are centred upon 1) Reflective Teaching, 2) Responsibility to Profession and 3) Improvement through Teaching Research with the overall aim of providing graduating students with the ground-work for competency in their professional life and also a love for their discipline and problem solving.

Enhancement of Teaching

The primary means by which I enhance my teaching is as follows (1) Research Informing Teaching The primary route by which I have enhanced my teaching is through my basic research areas, including the study of the behaviour of matter from first principles (also the coding of the allied routines) and the influence that these molecular mechanisms have on material behaviour, including static and dynamical (transport) properties. (2) Self-Improvement The second means by which I have enhanced my teaching is through continuing education. I successfully completed a post graduate diploma in higher education teaching while at Queen¿s University Belfast. This has provided me with an insight into best practice vis-à-vis module delivery and development. This includes the idea of reflection, supported by feedback questionnaires as well as peer review. (3) Input from Stake-holders I have been keenly involved with the professional accreditation and quality review of my discipline, namely Chemical Engineering. I am responsible for the accreditation review arising from Engineers Ireland and the IChemE as well as the recent QAQI review I also use feedback from all stake-holders, from students to employers to inform improvements. (4) Teaching Research/Curriculum Review Finally, I am aware that Teaching and Learning is a discipline in itself with associated best practice and research. My own discipline has a number of excellent resources in this area also, including the Journal of Chemical Engineering Education, the Journal of Engineering Education and professional bodies such as ASEE.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

Teaching as part of a professionally accredited degree program requires consideration for all the stake-holders, including undergraduates, graduates, employers and the professional bodies. This demands that best international practices be adopted throughout the programme. This is usually achieved through feedback from students, as well as through School/College committees and also through professional body reviews. My modules are designed so as to provide clear and concise information to the students, with multiple examples and ample opportunity for problem solving skills development. Notes are provided through Blackboard in advance of class. I utilise two sets of notes, namely one for students and one presented in class. The set of student notes have blanked sections, carefully selected so that students can use the lecture slots to fill them in appropriately. I provide supplementary reading, either supplied on-line or referenced from recommended textbooks is given where appropriate (particularly when a new topic area is being covered). This is particularly important with the introduction of modularisation, where it is clear that students have a self-study quota of hours. For assignments, particularly laboratory reports and computer assignments, I endeavour to provide students with results and feedback within a two (2) week period. This aids students in not repeating errors, and highlights where additional support may be needed at an early stage. I also aim to inter-relate, in the case of CHEN20070 (Computers in Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering) the skill of coding with knowledge from other core modules. I have come to appreciate the differences between inductive and deductive reasoning and the utility of adopting teaching styles that reflect the most effective means of learning. I have learned the benefit afforded by recent developments in education research and the need to relate outcomes to assessment.

Developing as a Teacher

I have received the qualification of PGCHET (QUB) which has given me a grounding in educational best-practice and teaching research resources. I am a member of the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) I utilise with my course development published articles from key education journals in Engineering, in particular, Chemical Engineering Education. I also keep a personal library of important textbooks in the field of education. I have provided support to colleagues in the area of teaching, particularly through peer review (colleagues taking teaching qualifications) and in the provision of sample notes and examples. Through the aforementioned measures, in conjunction with accreditation reviews and student feedback have provided me with both the impetus and information necessary to improve as a teacher.

Innovation & Leadership

I am committed to maintaining Chemical & Bioprocess Engineering as one of the top Schools of its type in Europe, including the maintenance of its Masters Level Accreditation. I aim to do this by personal teaching development, critical review and feedback from stake-holders, including undergraduates, graduates, employers and professional bodies.
