Biography

Susan McDonnell received a BSc in Biochemistry from University College Dublin  and then completed a PhD in Cell Biology in Dublin City University (DCU). She then spent four years working as a postdoctoral research fellow in Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee. In 1992 she was appointed lecturer in the School of Biotechnology, in DCU and moved to the Department of Chemical and Biochemical Engineering at UCD in 2004. Susan was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 1997 and spent a year's sabbatical in Memorial-Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York. Susan is a member of both the Irish and American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and is council member of the Irish Association for Cancer Research

Research

Research Interests

The group has focussed on 3 main areas which are all related to cell culture and fundamental biological properties of cells.


(1)
Increased productivity in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells: CHO cells have become the standard cells for the large-scale production of biopharmaceuticals with 70% of existing licensed biopharmaceuticals produced from modifications of the original CHO cell line.  Using genetic modification of several genes involved in apoptosis, cell growth and protein production we are developing cell lines that have increased growth rates and productivity.   

(2) Cancer cell biology: the majority of cancer deaths occur because the primary tumour has metastasised and spread to other organs in the body.  Using the primary breast cancer cell line, Hs578T we have established an invasive cell line called Hs578Ts(i)8 which represents a cell line model of invasive triple negative breast cancer.  Using the cell line model we have identified a panel of genes with a potential role in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.

(3) Identification of the role of Plac8 in growth and apoptosis: As part of our breast cancer biology work we have identiifed a novel gene, called placental specific 8 (Plac8).  We have recently shown that Plac8 is involved in regulating cell proliferation and apoptosis.  Overexpression of Plac8 in CHO cells inhibits the induction of apoptosis.
