Biography

I graduated from Trinity College Dublin first in my civil engineering class in 1998 and went on to do a PhD in University College London, where I was in receipt of a British Council Chevening Scholarship and a UCL scholarship. I completed my PhD after 2 and a half years, the topic of which was "The potential impacts of new public transport on travel behaviour

In April 2000, while completing my PhD, I started working as a lecturer in Trinity College Dublin's civil engineering department. I worked there for 3 and a half years, during which time I was co-ordinator of the MSc course.

In September 2003, I took up a position as a lecturer in the School of Architecture, Landscape and Civil Engineering in University College Dublin. The School is now called the School of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering and I am an Associate Professor in the School.

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

My philosophy centres around the student: I want to help students to become creative, critical thinkers and socially aware graduates. To do this, I believe a constructivist approach to teaching is required, where students must engage actively with the learning process. I use Problem Based learning and Collaborative Learning.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

Between 2013 and 2014, in my capacity as School Head of Teaching and Learning I lead a major review of both our curriculum and programme structures. I worked closely with Teaching and Learning in UCD to organised workshops and reviews of all our module content and programme structures. As as result of that, significant changes were made to programmes and modules and our programme outcomes were re-written. The changes are still on-going. I have found this to be an exciting and interesting challenge as in a course like engineering the difficulty lies in trying to balance good and innovative teaching with getting a lot of content across to students.

Developing as a Teacher

I took the postgraduate diploma in teaching and learning in 2007 and found that this provided me with a new desire to improve as a teacher. I also try to keep up to date with education literature and research and attend seminars and courses in UCD on teaching and learning. Also, I took part in a major study of critical thinking in the university in 2009-2011, and have published both at conferences and in journals on education in engineering.
