Biography:

Arturo González graduated in Civil Engineering at Cantabria University (Spain, 1995). Then, he obtained MSc and PhD's degrees from Trinity College Dublin (Ireland, 1996 and 2001), specialising in bridge weigh-in-motion and vehicle-bridge interaction models. In 2001 he continued research as Newman post-doctoral fellow in University College Dublin (UCD, Ireland). Since 2003, he is college lecturer in UCD and he currently imparts lectures in analysis of structures, elasticity and bridge engineering modules. His main interest of research is bridge loading, with emphasis on traffic loading and its dynamic effects. He is author of more than 70 papers (including 26 internationally peer-reviewed journals) in the areas of structural dynamics, health monitoring, traffic loading and bridge assessment. He has participated in EU COST345 and FP4 WAVE projects. He is co-author of COST345 (2002) and WAVE (1998) European final reports, and he has chaired sessions in Bridge Symposiums (BEI 2004, BRI 2006), and Modelling (MSO 2004) and Weigh-In-Motion (ICWIM 2005) International Conferences. He has been UCD coordinator for the 6th framework European project ARCHES (Assessment and Rehabilitation of Central European Highway Structures, 2006-2009) and participated in FP7 ASSET-ROAD (Advanced safety and driver support in essential road transport, 2007-2011).

At an international level, he has carried out research as part of European FP4 framework projects WAVE (Weighing of Axles and Vehicles in Europe, 1996-1999), COST345 (Assessment and Rehabilitation of Highway Structures, 2000-2002), COST323 (Weigh-In-Motion of Road Vehicles, 1998-2000), FP7 ASSET ( Advanced Safety & driver Support for Essential road Transport, 2008-2012) and coordinated UCD participation in FP6 ARCHES (Assessment and Rehabilitation of Central European Highway Structures, 2006-2009). He has also participated in the proposals: FP6 INCA, TOFFEE (2006) and FP7 FORT, ASSET (2007) and CHAIN (2008).

At a national level, he has been awarded a special distinction for his MSc thesis, and Trinity College and Forbairt Scholarships for the development of accurate Bridge Weigh-In-Motion systems, part of his PhD i(1996-2000), followed by the Pierse Newman Fellowship to carry out post-doctoral research in UCD (2001-2003). He obtained a scholarship from MCOS; RPS Consulting Engineers Ltd (2003) and he has participated in a successful HEA Transport proposal (2003). He also obtained a career development award from Urban Institute (2006). At an institutional level, he has been awarded a number of grants for dissemination and outputs under the UCD seed funding scheme (2008,2009).

Dr. Enrique Covian Regales - University of Oviedo (Spain)
In collaboration with University of Oviedo, a team of researchers is carrying out a theoretical study of the limitations and advantages of using an integrated monitoring system, consisting of synchronized GPS receivers and accelerometers. Using spectrum analysis, main natural frequencies of a simulated bridge response will be identified from an hybrid vehicle-bridge system. Characteristics of the bridge and real traffic (from a Weigh-on-Motion site) will be varied to identify where the system works best. A simple data processing algorithm will be developed to process the measured data. The algorithm will concentrate on what would be observed if a bridge is experiencing difficulty, ie., as result of a bearing providing excessive stiffness at one of its supports and how this affect the bridge response. A number of bridge responses will be generated to simulate a traffic population passing over the bridge. For this preliminary analysis,the UCD-University of Oviedo team will make use of the vehicle-bridge interaction numerical and finite element models developed for the last years. In a latter stage, an appropriate structure will be sought and the algorithm will be applied to measurements from a field trial for experimental validation
