Lecturer in geotechnical engineering. Completed a PhD on the topic of piling in 1998. Has published widely on the topic and is a member of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering technical committee on pile foundations and past chairman of Geotechnical Society of Ireland. Currently supervising six post graduate students. |

| My teaching philosophy is informed by my experience as a researcher and practicing engineer. | In 2010 I developed a module, Soil-Structure Interaction, focused on student centred learning. The technical content is delivered through formal lectures. Weekly workshops accounting for >50% of the contact hours are held in which students predict the response of real structures. These proved to be effective in encouraging student participation in the module, promoting an even workload through the semester and encouraging peer to peer teaching. Feedback on student performance in each workshop was provided at the beginning of the next class and an (anonymous) review of each group¿s prediction was compared to the actual response at the start of the class. Thus detailed feedback and feed-forward was available to students throughout. Student feedback in an end of term questionnaire was very positive with 86% of the class giving the module an overall rating of 4 or 5 (on a scale of 1-5) and a similar number identifying the workshop's efficacy. A peer observation was conducted by Dr. Tim McMahon from UCD's centre for teaching and learning who summarized his report as follows: "Overall, it was clear that Dr Gavin has an effective and professional working relationship with his students and an approach to teaching that encourages active learning in class. He knows how to plan and deliver lectures to the highest professional standards. In the post-observation tutorial, Dr Gavin showed the ability and willingness to use critical reflection to identify possible enhancements to the learning experiences of his student through a honing of his already exemplary teaching skills". |
| My most significant contribution to curriculum design was in the development of a new ME programme in Civil Engineering between September 2008 and the launch of the course in September 2009. To aid the process I enrolled on the course Curriculum Design in the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at UCD. As part of the CTL course I reviewed global experience in the development of curricula for engineering courses, with particular reference to increasing student engagement and how to match learning outcomes to course design. This taught me the importance of establishing clear goals for the programme, consideration of the educational philosophy, course content, organization and sequence and evaluation/assessment in a holistic approach to the design of a programme to meet staff and student expectations. The goals of the programme were clearly set out in three concise graduate attributes. The educational philosophy adopted encouraged student centred learning by combining the delivery of core technical content through traditional lectures with enhanced use of enquiry based learning, design projects (with industry input) and the introduction of a significant research project. The content was designed so that all aspects of Fink¿s (2003) taxonomy of significant learning were addressed in the programme. The learning objectives set out by the professional accreditation body were mapped to content, with alignment of the assessment method adopted (e.g. summative exam, continuous assessment, thesis, presentation/interview etc.) and the teaching and learning activities, e.g. formal lecture, group work, design project etc with a core principle being that non-technical skills such as team-building, presentation skills etc. should be taught as integral components of technical modules, rather than as add on modules. The content and sequence design have shown to provide progression and opportunities for reflection at a programme level. |
| In 2010 I completed a Graduate Diploma in University Teaching and Learning at UCD. I have attended a number of workshops, conference sessions and conferences of geotechnical engineering education including most recently a special session at the European Conference of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Education in Athens, September 2012, and the International Conference Shaking the Foundations of Geotechnical Engineering, held at NUI Galway from the 4th to 6th of July 2012. I am a reviewer for the European Journal of Engineering Education and was a member of the scientific committee for the International Conference of Geotechnical Engineering Education held at NUI Galway in July 2012. In 2009 I trained as a peer observer of teaching at the UCD Centre for Teaching and Learning. As part of the training I was peer reviewed and I have performed a number of peer reviews for colleagues in the School. Whilst I benefited from being observed when teaching, acting as a reviewer has in many ways been more beneficial as I observe our programme through the eyes of our students. |
| My contributions to teaching during my time at UCD include the development of student centred modules that make significant use of enquiry based learning and reflective practice. To keep developing my teaching I have completed a diploma in teaching and learning at UCD, publish papers and review work in leading education journals. I also publish and participate in conferences on education. I continue to provide peer observation of teaching to colleagues. |
