 |
Following graduation from University College Dublin with a degree in civil engineering, I joined Ove Arup and Partners Consulting Engineers. I spent several years working as a design engineer and on site in a resident engineering capacity before returning to UCD to undertake post graduate research and part-time lecturing. This led to an award of the Irish Cement Limited Bursary to study the phenomenon of carbonation of concrete. I joined the staff of UCD full-time in the late 1980's and currently lecture engineering and architecture students in modules in civil engineering design, materials technology and the theory and design of structures. My principal research interest concerns the durability of reinforced concrete structures and the mathematical modelling of deterioration mechanisms and the phenomenon of alkali-aggregate reaction. I have served as Head of Department of Civil Engineering (2004-2005), and Head of the UCD School of Architecture, Landscape and Civil Engineering (2005-2011). I am currently Head of the UCD School of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering. |
