Biography:

I studied at the University of Khartoum, Sudan where I graduated in 1999 with a degree in Civil Engineering. After spending two years there as a teaching assistant, I joined the M.Eng. Sc. programme in Water and Environmental Engineering, UCD. I completed the course in 2002 (First Class Honours) and I was awarded the Rory McPhilips Medal for academic merit.

In 2003, I started my PhD studies at the Centre for Water Resources Research (CWRR), in which I developed a three-dimensional hydrodynamic and water quality model of the Liffey Estuary and Dublin Bay.

Upon completion of my studies, I embarked on a research project funded by the Office of Public Works (OPW) in which I studied the processes affecting the attenuation of floods in compound channels using two- and three-dimensional models.
Currently I am a post-doctoral researcher on an INTERREG IVA project to develop an integrated catchment and a three-dimensional coastal model for the Dargle catchment and Bray beach, Co. Wicklow in order to assess the bathing water quality.

Research Interests

Three-dimensional modelling of density-stratified flows (e.g. thermal discharges, salinity intrusion) in estuaries, and coastal waters.
Two- and three-dimensional water quality modelling of sewage discharges, combined sewer overflows (CSOs) , and other similar discharges.
Two- and three-dimensional hydraulic modelling of compound channels.
Decision Support Systems: environmental management policies (e.g. optimum discharge flows and locations) and environmental legislations (e.g. Bathing Water Directive, Water Framework Directive, EU Flood Directive, and Shellfish Waters Directive).
