Biography

I have just finished a study on the history of the Byzantine historian Niketas Choniates. My other publications are on the church history of Socrates of Constantinople, the Religious History of Theodoret of Cyrrhus and then I turned to the study of slave wars and wrote a book about slave revolts in antiquity, as well as one on Spartacus.

Research

Research Interests

My interest has always been in how people write history, in both antiquity and contemporary times.  My MA thesis was an attempt to discover the reason behind the different representations of the bishop John Chrysostom. This led to my books on Socrates and Theodoret, both church historians. After seeing Gladiator, and then prompted by this, Spartacus, I wanted to discover how such a positive representation of a slave leader had emerged. This led to a general study of how slave revolts are described by historians, both ancient and modern.  I am now looking at the history of the Byzantine empire written by Niketas Choniates.
