Biography

1989-2004 Full-time lecturer (Senior Lecturer, 1998-) in the Department of American and Canadian Studies, University of Birmingham. Teaching and examining undergraduate and postgraduate courses in research skills and methods, American cultural studies, photography, film, and urban studies. Supervision of Masters and PhD students. Postgraduate Director (1996-2002) - responsible for administration of postgraduate programmes. Head of Department (2002-2004).


2004- Chair in American Studies and Director of the Clinton Institute for American Studies at University College Dublin. Responsible for the leadership of the Institute's research, postgraduate and cultural programmes.

Research Interests

Research Awards (pre-UCD)

1997. Successful application (with Prof. Douglas Tallack, University of Nottingham)
for Arts and Humanities Research Board funding to support the project ¿Representations of Three American Cities, 1870s to the 1930s'. The funding provided a Fellowship in American Urban Culture in the Department of American and Canadian Studies, for three years in the first instance, plus funding to support production of research. The total value of the award was approximately £200,000.


1998. Awarded a British Academy grant (£2,000) to carry out research at The
Chicago Historical Society and The Newbury Library, both in Chicago, 15th June - 30th July 1998.


1999. Awarded a Rockefeller International Fellowship in United States Studies, located at University of Iowa, 1st February - 30th April 1999.
