Biography

Dr Eleni Mangina has been appointed in 2002 to the position of College Lecturer in the School of Computer Science and Informatics at UCD. In 2007 she has been promoted to the level of Senior Lecturer. Prior to UCD she was a research assistant in the Department of EEE at Strathclyde University in the U.K. for one year to complete her PhD studies. In 1997 she was awarded with a three year scholarship from the Greek government (Government institution of state scholarships in Greece) to complete her postgraduate studies specialised in Artificial Intelligence. This funding was used to complete her postgraduate studies (M.Sc. in Artificial Intelligence) in the Department of Artificial Intelligence at University of Edinburgh in the UK, and supported the first two years of her PhD studies in the Department of EEE, Intelligent Systems group, at Strathclyde University in the UK. She has also an M.Sc.in Agricultural Science (Informatics laboratory at the Agricultural University of Athens), where she was first introduced to the concepts of Artificial Intelligence.

Dr Eleni Mangina¿s research profile for the last 10 years includes active research in the area of applications of agent-based technology in a number of different application domains like engineering, bioinformatics, education, agriculture, supply chain management and music. She has been an active researcher in national and international level, with a track record of around 100 publications in national and international peer reviewed workshops and conferences and high standard international journals (i.e. IEEE Transactions, Elsevier etc.). Her research group is comprised of full time PhD students and a number of students have graduated already under her supervision with MSc & PhD degree. Dr Mangina has successfully awarded research funding at a national and international level (HEA, UCD Funding Scheme, Enterprise Ireland and European Commission funding). She has been an active member in societies related to agent based technology and e-learning information technology applications and has organised a number of relevant international workshops. She has also been an external examiner for colleges in Ireland. Her research leadership has encouraged the deployment of the results from her research group within different Schools in UCD and other academic institutions abroad. Based on her teaching experience in Fudan University, Software School (Shanghai) and despite the diversity of cultures in the world and the implications of it within the teaching strategies and learning styles, knowledge transfer across different cultures has been one of the most challenging tasks for Dr Mangina. Dr Mangina has been a member of IEEE Computer Society since 1999. She has conducted a number of research related assignments as registered European Commission expert evaluator for the 7th Framework Programme; Research proposal evaluator for EU funded projects under PENED programme, and Internal PhD examiner for UCD PhD candidates and external examiner for PhD candidates as well as external examiner of courses in Ireland. She has also given invited talks in the areas of agent applications and effective e-learning practices.

One of Dr Mangina¿s latest leadership achievement and successful secured funding in teaching (¿375000 for 2011 and ¿595000 for 2012) has been the Springboard initiative funded from HEA, where she has been directing the three levels (7,8,9) Certificates in ICT for up-skilling or re-skilling unemployed participants in ICT and preparing them to enter the workforce again with great positive implications for the participants¿ personal achievement as well as Irish society¿s economic benefit. The target group for Springboard 2011 was unemployed people who had lost their jobs as a result of the recession and who would benefit from up-skilling or cross-skilling to get back into sustainable employment. Springboard complements the core State-funded education and training system and is one of a number of special initiatives designed to support people transition back to employment.  A second phase of Springboard funding was announced as part of the last Budget in Ireland, with ¿10m committed to fund an expansion of Springboard provision in 2012. The Certificates in ICT are the first on-line and blended learning, innovative programmes which build on the established portfolio of CSI graduate taught courses but is customised to individual student needs and their prior learning experiences and allows participants to work with the Programme Director to choose their own software programming modules and design their own certificate focusing on software development training on a part-time, flexible and tailored to their needs mode. This means that participants can meet their own exact software development needs depending on the area they are coming from, upskill or reskill in the area of software development in their own time, through distance learning, and/or blended learning and position themselves to seize future (and maybe alternative) career opportunities in the Information and Communications Technology industry and applied ICT.

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

My philosophy of teaching stems from my love of learning through different approaches (face-to-face and e-learning) and supporting those that want to learn at any stage of their life through my teaching strategies. Education is not about distance, it is about learning and enhancing critical thinking skills.

Enhancement of Teaching

My philosophy encourages reviews and enhancement of curriculum at both module and programme level. I have been challenged to introduce programmes and form curriculum for the unemployed in the area of ICT, from different working backgrounds seeking either to advance their knowledge in ICT or to enter it as a new subject. Lifelong learning and distance learning are the key contributors to teaching enhancement for this type of part-time student intake. The great challenge of teaching them is that the path for each one is different. I have enhanced my teaching taking into account, not only the feedback from the students and the module grading, but also taking part in their educational reform step by step and evaluating my teaching through the success of the ICT courses based on their employment status after course completion under my guidance. The main questions that had to be answered and taken into account in my teaching strategy were: Where is the student starting from? Where is the student going? What guidance do these students need? Reflecting upon Springboard 2011, the outcomes of the programmes had to be clearly set and how they can fit into the workforce needs, along with career advice and pastoral care. The testimonials from the first round of graduates prove the success of the programmes and the positive academic experience that UCD has offered to these students. Springboard courses in UCD have shown that pedagogy through curriculum reform can improve the society during such a challenging economic climate.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

Updating the curriculum structure and content is a task that takes place on a yearly basis given the self-reflection based on the course outcomes and the feedback from the students. Continuous review of all my course materials is taking place for the evaluation of textbooks and software toolkits. The initiation of new modules during the last 5 years include the: COMP30380; COMP20170; COMP20210 (On-Line); COMP30500 (On-Line). All my modules utilise computer-aid element of learning (on-line assignment submission; video-conferencing/Skype; web-based learning environments (Moodle); discussion threads). My personal major educational enhancement and curriculum reform has been the initiation of the Springboard ICT programmes in UCD (Level 7, 8, 9), which allow participants to work with the Programme Director (Dr Mangina) to choose their own software programming modules (based on the software training needs individual assessment) and design their own certificate focusing on software development training. More than ever before, there is a call for education provisions that are flexible and responsive to the needs of employers/graduate employees. The programmes are driven by awareness of the economic climate and the trends in society and the market needs in ICT. They offer at least ten on line modules (Java, C, Cloud Computing, Android App Development, Databases, to name a few) on different stages (1,2,3,4). The participants can choose their modules from a list of optional software development related modules. This means that students can exactly meet their own software development needs on their own time, through distance learning and position themselves to seize future (and maybe alternative) career opportunities in the ICT industry. The 2012 courses have been re-structured with the addition of a number of extra on-line modules, due to the high demand from the students and given the positive results from HEA Springboard 2011 evaluation (http://www.hea.ie/files/SPRINGBOARDSTAGE1EVALUATION.pdf) http://www.csi.ucd.ie/content/springboard-graduate-certificate-information-and-communications-technology-ict http://www.csi.ucd.ie/content/springboard-university-certificate-information-and-communications-technology-ict

Developing as a Teacher

I am a strong believer of teaching evaluation, self-reflection and continuous teaching development. The teaching challenge within Springboard courses over the past two years has captured my interest not only through the third level curriculum reform based on the current industry needs, but also the need of flexibility within each module and the course as a whole for the needs of lifelong learning in terms of individuals' needs, based on their professional background and level of expertise. I have learnt that even when problems encounter there is always a positive outcome, if feedback is taken into account for programme/module enhancement. Provided comments/feedback from external evaluators (HEA) has proved invaluable and promoted the lifelong learning experience and brought into attention the need in Irish society for distance learning. I have had always a passion for e-learning and mobile learning environments and the experience through on-line delivery within Springboard modules has been inspiring not only from the significant contribution they have made to the students but also the basis for the provision of more on line offered programmes from UCD. You can access as guest my modules on line at: csimoodle.ucd.ie (as a guest for the modules: COMP20010; COMP30500; COMP30380; Springboard Induction)

Innovation & Leadership

Teaching and Learning has no boarders. Directing programmes with blended form of delivery for Computer Science has given the flexibility and ability for lifelong learning when it comes to study the development of the next generation computing technologies. The provision of on-line teaching and learning material is one of the key factors of success in 4th level Ireland with the potential to increase both the reach of teaching in boarders outside the physical academic environment and the students educational experience.
