Research

Research Interests

My current research is being carried out with Éire Composites (Galway) as part of an Innovation Partnership Project, co-funded by Enterprise Ireland. The work deals with fibre reinforcement of ceramic materials. This includes: material selection, chemical analysis and mechanical testing. The project is supervised by Dr. Ken Stanton.

 

My previous Post Doctoral research was carried out as part of a C+ commercialisation project called Nanogrind. This work was supported by Enterprise Ireland. The project involved the enhancement and optimisation of a rapid discharge sintering process as a novel route to rapid densification of diamond metal matrix composites. The project was supervised by Dr. Denis Dowling.

 

My PhD was undertaken under the supervision of Dr. Denis Dowling and Prof. Gerry Byrne, in association with Dow Corning Plasma Solutions (Cork) as part of an Innovation Partnership Project with Enterprise Ireland. The focus of the thesis was the deposition of nanometre thick siloxane coatings on polymer films using an atmospheric pressure plasma system. This research involved plasma characterisation, physical and chemical testing of the nanometre thick films and process optimisation. A number of publications were carried out in cooperation with Queens University Belfast and Dublin City University.

 

A wide range of characterisation and analytical techniques has been used as a result of the broad range of materials and processes involved in the research projects undertaken to date. The main focus of my work is materials and process analysis, characterisation and selection. This work includes the use of the following techniques: Optical and electron microscopy, surface profilometry, ellipsometery, contact angle and surface energy measurement, infrared spectroscopy, emission spectroscopy, pyrometry, hardness, pin-on-disc wear and scratch testing, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction and coating deposition (high and low pressure plasma systems).
