Biography

Dr Patrick Orr has wide ranging research interests across the broad field of palaeobiology.

There is a particular focus on the taphonomy (the physical, chemical and biological processes responsible for the preservation of organisms in the geological record) of exceptional biotas. These are fossil assemblages in which the decay-prone tissues of organisms are preserved in addition to the hard parts ("bones shells and teeth") that comprise the fossil assemblages typical of most of the geological record. Exceptional  biotas therefore offer a more complete sample of the original biodiversity of ancient ecosystems and are thus one of the major focuses of palaeobiological research worldwide.    Studying the taphonomy of such fossils helps not constrain interpretations of their biology and refine models for the environmental and temporal contexts in which exceptional biotas are found. Our research to elucidate the processes by which these biotas are preserved is usually conducted with collaborators worldwide who are interested in reconstructing the biological affinities of the fossils.

A second major area of research is the evolutionary palaeoecologyof the first complex marine animal communities. Our approach is to use the trace fossils and ichnofabrics (structures produced by organisms moving on and through sediment) to reveal what changes over time in the use of ecospace occurred. More generally we research how trace fossils can be used as a tool to constrain paleoenvironments in stratigraphical studies and basin analysis.

Current research also includes the rapidly developing field of  conservation paleobiology - using fossil assemblages of natural and anthropogenic origin from the recent past as a benchmark against which to test extant communities for environmental change.

Prior to joining the UCD School of Earth Sciences in 2003, Dr Patrick Orr was a lecturer in NUI Galway and before held postdoctoral positions at the Universities of Bristol and Oxford, NUI, Galway and a temporary lectureship at the University of Bristol.
