Biography

Laia holds a Bachelor degree in Marine Sciences from the University of Vigo (Spain) and a M.Sc. in Coastal Geosciences and Engineering from the Christian-Albrechts University of Kiel (Germany) graduating with a thesis on Mg-Carbonate precipitation experiments.

She joined the School of Geological Sciences in UCD in October 2010 as a PhD student in the Palaeoclimate Research Group led by Prof. Frank McDermott. Her PhD project, entitled "Atmospheric controls on rainfall and soil water d18O; implications for proxy-based NAO reconstruction in Europe", was funded through an SFI Research Frontiers Programme grant.

She has been recently appointed Lecturer in Low Temperature Geochemistry at the UCD School of Earth Sciences. She is currently working on how different persistence patterns of the North Atlantic Oscillation and the East Atlantic pattern affect the relationship between the oxygen isotopic composition of precipitation and climate over Europe.

Research

Research Interests

- Palaeoenvironmental reconstructions using stable isotopes in speleothems (cave carbonates) to infer past climate variability and the role of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) as a driver of climatic conditions in western Europe during the last two millennia.

- NAO persistence patterns and their implications for calibrating proxy-based NAO reconstructions

- The effect of the East Atlantic pattern on winter climate variability and precipitation d18O patterns associated to the NAO.

- Rainfall and soil-water d18O temporal variability at temperate sites such as La Garma cave (Santander, Spain) and their implications for cave drip-waters.
