Biography

Dr Steven Hollis is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the iCRAG Raw Materials research spoke. He obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Birmingham in 2007 and an MSc in Geochemistry from the University of Leeds in 2008.  His PhD was completed at the University of Southampton in 2012 on the Evolution and Mineralization of the Tyrone Igneous Complex of Northern Ireland. During his PhD he also sailed on IODP Leg 331 to the Iheya North hydrothermal field, and worked for one year as an exploration geologist for Dalradian Resources. For his first Postdoctoral position Dr Hollis was employed as an Embedded Researcher for the Geological Survey of Western Australia at CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization) in Perth. His project focused on targeting VMS mineralization in the Archean Yilgarn Craton of Western Australia.

Research

Research Interests

1) Irish-type mineralization. Current project objectives include: (i) Establishing Cu isotope analytical techniques at UCD; (ii) Analyzing Cu-Zn isotopes in Navan sphalerite, and clumped O-C isotopes ore-stage carbonate minerals; and (iii) Assessing these analytical methods as mineral exploration tools. 

2) Modern and ancient VMS deposits. Case studies include the modern Iheya North hydrothermal field (Japan), and the Archean Nimbus, King and Teutonic Bore VMS deposits of Western Australia. I am particularly interested in the application of lithogeochemical, mineral chemical and hyperspectral vectors to ore.

3) Linear orogens and their potential to host economic mineralization (e.g. SEDEX, VMS, orogenic Au).  I am currently working on arc-ophiolite terranes preserved in the Irish sector of the Ordovician Grampian-Taconic orogeny (e.g. Tyrone Igneous Complex, Charlestown Group).
