Biography

Koen Torremans is a structural geologist and ore geologist in the iCRAG raw material research spoke (Irish Centre for Research in Applied Geology). Koen obtained his at the Geodynamics and Geofluids research group, KU Leuven. His PhD research focused on understanding fracture and seal vein forming processes in mid-crustal environments, which involved numerical modelling of veins, a structural analysis of Cu-Co deposits in the Central African Copperbelt and investigation of vein microstructures.
At iCRAG, Koen's research focuses on 3D modelling of the Irish Carboniferous Basin on a regional and deposit scale, with a special interest into the structural evolution of Lower Carboniferous faulting and its links to fluid flow and mineralization.

Research

Research Interests

My research interests are structural geology, ore mineralogy, mining geology, computational geology and numerical modelling. More specifically my research specialties are:
  1. Structural control on ore deposits. Stratiform Cu-Co deposits and Zn-Pb mineralization in Ireland.
  2. Veining and fracture and seal processes in rocks
  3. Discrete Element Modelling of rock fractures
