Research Interests

Project Title: 3D Discrete numerical modelling of volcano seismic source processes

Project Description:Understanding and locating seismic sources is one of the most important and challenging tasks in volcano seismology. A better knowledge of the source mechanisms helps in the assessment of the volcanic hazards associated with volcanoes. We aim to investigate the source mechanisms acting on Arenal volcano, located in north-western Costa Rica. Arenal is one of the most active volcanoes of Central America. Arenal activity is characterized by intense Strombolian explosions. In February 2005, a seismic experiment was carried during which several explosions were recorded. From these data five moderate events were extracted. In order to retrieve the source mechanism associated with these explosions, a moment tensor inversion will be performed. The moment tensor represents the stress acting on the source point and describes the physical forces generated by the source. The moment tensor is mathematically defined by the deconvolution of the Green's Functions with the displacements recorded by the stations. The Green's Functions represent the response of the medium to an impulsive force generated at the source point and propagating to the receiver location. To calculate the Green's Functions, 3D numerical simulations will be used. The real topography of the volcano and a monodimensional velocity model will be used in the simulations. Ultimately, we will carry out a detailed study of the fluid mechanisms capable of generating these source processes.
