Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

I believe in the central position of the pursuit of truth in university teaching; and I believe that twenty first-century methods can help find it. My aim as a teacher is to foster curiosity, teach the skills of independent research & open the minds of our learners.

Enhancement of Teaching

I foster critical thinking and deep engagement through careful preparation of appropriate reading and reading-realated tasks, and I make good use of class discussion and debate. I find student feedback to be very useful, and most encouraging, and I have had the pleasure of being nominated for a President's Teaching Award. In modules with a practical focus, such as Research Methods, I favor demonstrations, followed by practical tasks and constant feedback. In other modules, I favor incorporating visual media, and I have developed a large image database for use in my teaching.
