| Damian Flynn received MEng and PhD degrees in Electrical &
Electronic Engineering at The Queen's University of Belfast in 1991 and
1994, respectively. The PhD research programme was completed in
collaboration with Parsons Power Generation Systems. In 1994 he was
appointed as a SERC research fellow at The Queen's University of
Belfast, before becoming a lecturer in 1995, and later a senior
lecturer, at the same university. In 2009 he joined the Electricity Research Centre at University College Dublin, where he is a SFI Stokes Senior Lecturer in Power System Operation and Control, and Deputy Director of the Electricity Research Centre. His research interests include power system analysis and control, and renewables integration into electrical networks. He is also interested in advanced modelling and control techniques applied to power plant. |
| The increasing penetration of renewable energy sources into power systems is gradually displacing conventional generation. In the operational timeframe, conventional generation would have provided certainty of production, an ability to be dispatched and various system support services. Current research topics focus upon the challenges in operating future power systems incorporating variable and/or uncertain renewable energy sources. A key research theme is the flexibility needs of the power system, and the ability of individual components - generation, loads and storage - to contribute towards system support services - load following, spinning reserve, inertial support - while evaluating the resulting impact - thermal plant cycling, user comfort for discretionary load, state of charge of electric vehicles. Probabilistic (stochastic) tools are increasingly used to model the impact of uncertain renewable energy sources within unit scheduling and energy management system ( |
