Biography

Thomas J. Brazil received the B.E. degree in Electrical Engineering with First Class Honours from University College Dublin in 1973, and was awarded the Ph.D. degree in 1977 by the National University of Ireland. He subsequently worked on microwave sub-system development at Plessey Research (Caswell) UK from 1977 to 1979. After a year as a Lecturer in the Department of Electronic Engineering, University of Birmingham, UK, he returned to UCD in 1980, where he is now the Professor and Head of Electronic Engineering. Professor Brazil is an elected representative of the Professors of the University on its Governing Authority and has worked in several areas of science policy, both nationally and on behalf of the European Union.  He is an IEEE Fellow and Secretary of the Royal Irish Academy.

Research

Research Interests

· My research interests are mainly in two areas within the broad heading of high-frequency CAD. The first relates to the non-linear circuit-level modelling of active microwave devices, including both FET-based and HBT/bipolar. The second is in the field of non-linear simulation and system-level modelling techniques combining time-domain and frequency-domain descriptions; · A dominant research interest over many years has been in the fields of non-linear modeling and device characterisation techniques, with particular emphasis on applications to microwave and RF transistor devices such as the GaAs FET, PHEMT, BJT and the HBT (both GaAs-based and Si/SiGe-based), but also related to deep sub-micron RF CMOS technology; · I also have specific research interests in the area of novel algorithms for the efficient CAD of mixed time-domain and frequency-domain non-linear systems, as well as the behavioural or high-level modeling of complete circuits and sub-systems using techniques such as discrete-time Volterra series. A further interest is the study of lossy multiple line interconnects for high-speed digital and signal integrity applications; · The above activity extends to the general area of CAD and the design of high-frequency electronic systems, including non-linear microwave/mm-wave sub-system design (power amplifiers, oscillators, mixers etc. for mobile communications, CPW-based mm-wave detectors, satellite systems, automotive FMCW anti-collision systems, short-hop links etc.); · My wider research experience over the years has ranged from the development of auto-routing algorithms for CMOS gate-array ICs to the study of optoelectronic devices and systems.
