Biography

UCD graduate in French and History, Phyllis Gaffney studied in Strasbourg, Cambridge and Florence and was awarded a PhD in Medieval French from Cambridge in 1982.  She lectured in French at Carysfort College of Education (1976-88), taught Old French (part-time) at Trinity College Dublin (1981-84), and moved to UCD French Department in 1988. Lectured in French language and literature (medieval and modern). Served as Associate Dean for Arts Postgraduate Studes (1997-2000) and as Head of the French Department (2004-07).  


Honours and awards include University Entrance Scholarship, French Government Scholarship, French Government decoration chevalier dans l'ordre des palmes académiques. 


Her publications include Healing Amid the Ruins: the Irish Hospital at Saint-Lô (1945-46) and Constructions of Childhood and Youth in Old French Narrative


In 2015 she took early retirement from UCD, and continues to pursue research interests in medieval French literature and twentieth-century Franco-Irish relations.
