Biography

Senior Lecturer

Dr Valerie Richardson studied at University College Swansea, Wales where she obtained a joint honours degree in social administration and psychology. She then qualified as a social worker in the University of Edinburgh obtaining a Diploma in Social Work and the Certificate of Qualification in Social Work. Her PhD was obtained from the National University of Ireland the title of which was Mothers Too Soon? A Study of the Decision Making Processes of Adolescent Pregnant Women.

Before joining the staff of the Department of Social Policy and Social Work in UCD in 1973 she worked as a residential care worker and as a social worker with the Edinburgh Corporation Social Work Department. Her research interests are child care policy and practice, Irish and European family policy, single parents and work/life balance. She has published in the area of family policy, young mothers, child care policy and practice, residential care and adoption. She is the Irish representative on the European Observatory on the Social Situation, Demography and the Family. She is currently undertaking a research study entitled ‘How Fathers’ Employment Changes after the Birth of a Child and its Impact on Involvement with their Children and Families: A Comparative study in Ireland, Sweden and the United States’ in conjunction with the Department of Sociology, University of North Texas.
