I joined the school in 2003. My field of research is contemporary poetry in English, with a focus on recent American Poetry and Poetics. The core of my research continues to explore the practice of twentieth and twenty-first century US avant-garde poetries. I have published extensively on experimental late twentieth and twenty-first century American poetic practice in journals and books. I also have a longstanding interest in modern and contemporary Welsh poetry in English.

Early research examines the legacy of the poetics of a loose collective 'language writing' on recent poetry and how we might conceptualise a 21st Century lyricism. Recent published articles and chapters examine how contemporary poetry represents the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars; the poetry of post devolutionary Wales and its relationship to a culture of militarism, and the dynamic between poetic performance and radio. My next monograph considers the history and reception of American poets and poetry on the BBC's Third Programme.

Prior to working at UCD, I lectured at Trinity College, Dublin. I have also worked outside of academia, in fields ranging from psychiatric nursing to BBC Wales. I am a published poet and have recently completed my second volume of poetry Cabaret published by New Dublin Press (2017).

Research Interests

Modern and Contemporary American Poetry and Poetics; relationship between poetic practice and theory; recent Welsh poetry in English. My monograph study of contemporary American Poetry and Poetics (with a sustained focus of language writing) - Reading Error was published by Peter Lang in 2007. This work examined the poetry of Charles Bernstein, Michael Palmer, Lyn Hejinian and Jennifer Moxley.

My book length study, Contemporary Poetry (Edinburgh University Press, 2011) considers the work of more than sixty poets from the US, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and the Caribbean. Contemporary Poetry examines how poetry represents and addresses issues of subjectivity, politics, performance, ideas of space and environment, multilingualism and the impact of information technologies on the texture, form and dissemination of poetry.

I have also published volume of poetry Sound Archive (Seren, 2011). This volume was shortlisted for two international prizes (the Michael Murphy and Felix Dennis Forward first volume awards). It won the National Rupert and Eithne Strong First Volume Award in 2012.
I have recently completed my second volume of poetry Cabaret (New Dublin Press, 2017). My third academic book (which I am currently researching) investigates the relationship between American poets and the BBC radio post WW2 - in particular material broadcast on The Third Programme.
Current research interests include: the relationship between contemporary poetry and war; poetry and ideas of document and data; the relationship between poetic performance, sound studies and radio broadcasting.

2016 (Feb-May) Compass Lines  Irish Writers' Centre
I was commissioned by the Irish Writers' Centre, with poet Miriam Gamble, to produce a collaborative poetic work as part of their Compass Lines #2. The project resulted in a pamphlet published by The Irish Writers' Centre entitled City of Two Suns.

2013-15 Devolved Voices, Aberystwyth University
