Research

Research Interests

My research focuses on the analysis of environmental change through space and time; looking at potential approaches to more effectively integrate natural capital values and environmental considerations into urban and rural planning decisions. Although the focal point of my research has been physical geography, human geography aspects of policy implementation and public participation in decision-making are of significant interest to me. I am particularly interested in the contribution of spatial analytics to environmental planning and governance. This includes the development of pragmatic geospatial methods to enhance assessment and monitoring processes in support of evidence-based, sustainable and resilient spatial planning.

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy is practice-based, linking theory to real-life problems. I strive to expose students to the latest scientific knowledge and technology through real-world examples, getting them to apply problem-solving strategies and providing them with the geospatial technical skills that will stand for them in the workplace and research careers.

Collaborators

Internal Collaborators

I have developed and delivered several 5 credit Master level modules related to the practical application of Geographic Information Systems in the School of Biology and Environmental Science and the School of Agriculture and Food Science. I have also delivered occasional lectures in the School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy.

I have collaborated with Dr Tamara Hochstrasser from the School of Biology and Environmental Science and Dr John Fry from the School of Agriculture and Food Science in EPA-funded research projects. More recently, I have collaborated with Dr Craig Bullock from the School of Architecture, Planning and Environmental Policy on an EPA proposal.

External Collaborators

I'm currently collaborating with the All Ireland Research Observatory at Maynooth University on a EPA-funded project developing an online environmental sensitivity mapping tool to support Strategic Environmental Assessment of plans and programmes in Ireland. I'm also collaborating with Dr Brian Espey in the School of Physics in Trinity College Dublin examining ecological light pollution.

I have collaborated in a number of interdisciplinary European projects, including ESPON, INTERREG and FP7. Through my role as a board member in both the UK-Ireland branch of the International Association for Impact Assessment and the Spanish Association for Environmental Impact Assessment, I have a wide network of impact assessment colleagues with whom I collaborate on an ongoing basis. I am currently co-writing a number of scientific journal articles with Dr Paola Gazzola, from Newcastle University, and I have recently submitted a research proposal to the EPA with Dr Riki Therivel from Oxford Brookes University.

I have extensive involvement with Irish Local Authorities and I have worked with private environmental consultancies (e.g. RPS Group Plc. ScottCawley Ltd, CAAS Ltd.) in a number of projects.
