Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

Drawing on the tradition of non-directive pedagogies and the 'standpoint theory', I inform my teaching philosophy to the aim of stimulating students to build their own critical spirit and to problematize the inputs they receive instead of internalizing mere notions. This implies the introduction of qualitative assessment methods whenever possible.

Enhancement of Teaching

Enhancing innovative and experimental methods of teaching and new module design are paramount in my agenda: it is the case of the interactive mapping workshop with Philippe Rekacewicz which I organized in March 2016 in the context of my modules Postcolonial Geographies and Development geographies, involving both graduates and undergraduates, whose outcomes are the object of a permanent exposition at UCD School of Geography. Repeating this kind of experiences in the next years is one of the points to which I am committed. Internationalization is likewise a central point of my philosophy, involving both welcoming international students and looking for new exchanges, and presenting in class international debates and issues of scientific discussion occurring outside the English-speaking academic world, when translations are available. Parts of this strategy were my invitation to Prof. Marcelo Lopes de Souza (University of Rio de Janeiro) for a guest lecture on the Geographies of Development, February 2016, and the creation of the new modules Postcolonial Geographies (Master level, running since 2015) and Geographies of Latin America (envisaged for 2017). Modules coordinated at UCD since 2015: Globalisation, Regional and World Economy (stage 2); Ideas in Geography (stage 3); Geography of Innovation (Master - in collaboration with D. Kogler); Development Geographies (stage 3); Postcolonial Geographies and Geographies of Latin America (Master), Fieldwork in the Global South (Master ¿ new module in preparation). Including graduate (Masters and PhD) supervision

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

In 2015-2016, I contributed to the creation of the new MSc Geographies of the Global South and its Curriculum Review for 2015-2016, and organized the Global South Week (February-March 2016) for launching this new programme. This is both a part of my commitment to internationalisation and an occasion to enhance links with my research-oriented teaching at graduate level and my research projects, especially in the fields of postcolonial geographies, critical and radical geographies from Latin America and international studies on critical development.

Developing as a Teacher

My first teaching experiences took place in Italy with the participation to exam boards as an expert member and the delivery of seminary lessons in Historical Geography. In 2013-2014 I had the possibility to teach a full module in Cultural Geographies, with seminary on the Postcolonial Studies, for the University of Geneva, what led me to build a corpus of teaching materials on these subjects. Two modules in Geopolitics and Geography of Population taught in the summer term 2014 (May-August) at the UNILA in Foz do Iguaçu (Brazil) were the occasion for me to deal with Latin American topics and deepen my international experiences. These experiences, including modules in Geographies of Tourism and Urban Geographies taught at the University of Verona in 2014-15, have strengthened my capacities in empathy towards students and my skills in problem-solving, facing the difficulties entailed by facing at each time a new language (I delivered modules in French, Italian, Portuguese and English) and a new method of organization and grading. The experience of the last two years at UCD has decidedly enhanced my capacity of dealing with big classes and with different teaching strategies depending on the group dimensions and the level (graduate or undergraduate)
