Biography

Michael Staunton is a medieval historian, specializing in historical and hagiographical writing, intellectual life and the relationship between religion and politics in the middle ages. His most recent book, The Historians of Angevin England, was published by Oxford University Press in 2017. Previous books include Thomas Becket and his Biographers (Boydell and Brewer, 2006), The Lives of Thomas Becket (Manchester University Press, 2001), and The Illustrated Story of Christian Ireland (Emerald Press, 2001). He was awarded a Government of Ireland Senior Research Fellowship by the Irish Research Council, and has held visiting fellowships at the Center for Medieval Studies, Fordham University, New York, and a visiting professorship at Bard College, New York. He is the recipient of UCD's College Teaching Award, and is Fellow in Teaching and Academic Development.

After a B.A. and M.A. at University College Cork and a PhD at Cambridge University, he worked as Research Associate on the Angevin Acta project at the Faculty of History, Cambridge, and lectured at the University of St Andrews, Scotland. At UCD he has taught survey courses on medieval Europe and specialist courses on such subjects as Medieval Ireland and Britain, biography and autobiography, and intellectual life in the High Middle Ages. He also teaches at MA and PhD level on Research and Writing and on approaches to the Middle Ages, and supervises postgraduate dissertations.

The Historians of Angevin England is the first book to be devoted to the subject of historical writing in Angevin England, a period recognised as one of great achievement. It focuses on nine historians - Roger of Howden, Ralph of Diceto, William of Newburgh, Gerald of Wales, Gervase of Canterbury, Ralph of Coggeshall, Walter Map, and Richard de Templo ¿ and what they reveal about contemporary attitudes to such subjects as kingship, rebellion, crusade, warfare, religion, government, women, heretics, and foreigners.
