Biography

After studying in Dublin, Paris and Oxford, I spent a decade in the Department of Foreign Affairs, working on European political integration, before being sent to Paris (the Ecole Nationale d'Administration) and then Moscow, where I served as Gorbachev's perestroika got underway. This gave me the chance to observe the elite revolution of the late 1980s and (after taking up a post-doctoral Newman fellowship) of the early 1990s. As a result, I moved back to academic life and since then, my work has focused on Soviet and post-Soviet Russia.

My initial research interests lay in the popular culture of 19th century France and the history of French psychiatry, on which I published my first book, The Superstitious Mind (1987). Since my years in Gorbachev's Russia, my attention has shifted to Russia and latterly the culture and politics of the Stalin era. I published two books on post-Soviet Russia  and my current research project concerns the Stalin cult.

I have wider interests in Russian and Eastern European history of the 19th and 20th centuries, which are reflected in my teaching, conferences and edited volumes.
