| Born in Cork. Placed first among all students of the Faculty of Arts in the Honours BA Degree Examination at University College Cork in 1987, qualifying with a First-Class Honours Degree in Modern Irish and English. Awarded a First-Class Honours Higher Diploma in Education (1988) and a First-Class Honours MA Degree in Modern Irish (1991), also from University College Cork. Following a German Government Scholarship to pursue further postgraduate studies at the Albert-Ludwig University, Freiburg, was employed for five years as a Research Assistant on an interdisciplinary project entitled Mündlichkeit und Schriftlichkeit im späten Mittelalter ('Orality and Literacy in the Late Middle Ages'). A doctoral thesis, The Scribe in Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century Ireland: Motivations and Milieu, was published in 2000 (Nodus Publikationen, Münster). Returned to Ireland in 1996 to take up a lectureship in the Combined Departments of Irish at University College Cork, before joining University College Dublin in 1998 as a Lecturer in Modern Irish and as an NUI Post-doctural Fellow. Awarded a Post-doctoral Scholarship to the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies in 2001. Appointed to a permanent lectureship in Modern Irish at University College Dublin in 2004. Awarded an IRCHSS Fellowship in 2007 to conduct research on the theme 'Narrative Creation and Re-creation in Modern Irish: A Case Study'. That theme forms part of an edition of the romantic prose tale Cath Cluana Tarbh ('The Battle of Clontarf') which was published by the Irish Texts Society. Stern, worked as Keeper of Manuscripts in the city's Royal Library.

| It is my honest belief that my teaching must build confidence in students once they see that I want them to learn and engage with a subject that I love. One effective way, albeit a very simple one, is my concerted effort to get to know students by name and to foster (as far as possible) an interactive atmosphere during class. I also believe that students best acquire small-step skills when they have a clear view of the structure and applicability of course content as a whole. To this end, structured planning and well-defined learning outcomes are crucial. Moreover, class discussion and oral presentation by students are valuable tools in promoting critical thinking and reflection on a given topic. This goes as far as interrogating what has already been written on a given text, for example, or alerting students to challenging questions during lectures which, in turn, promote their engagement and reflection. The latter are fundamental skills in the area of language teaching also, but this is a process which, I believe, must go beyond the lecture / tutorial, when students reflect on Irish-language posters on campus, for example, or signposting while travelling home at weekends. Student feedback is most important even in highlighting practical issues, e.g. my checking that secondary sources are available in the Library, not just at the beginning, but throughout the semester, or increasing my contact hours. External observation has enriched my teaching in areas such as body language, use of physical space, and voice projection. |
| I am committed to introducing courses which can maximise student learning by embracing opportunities to offer my students new modules. I am currently part of a team of colleagues offering a new module on literacy skills at undergraduate level. I have also designed a new language module for postgraduate students of Irish (Grad. Dip., MA, PhD). An important development in the latter is the oral presentation whereby students are required to present an area of grammar to their peers. This requires an understanding of the topic, and necessary preparation includes students keeping a diary of aspects of grammar which pose difficulties for them. This also encourages students to apply what they have learned in a personal way, while it proves to be an effective way of maximising their learning, and helps skills such as communcation, planning and organisation. My teaching relates to the medieval period, and I am passionate that its linguistic, cultural and narrative richness should engage students in a positive and enlightening manner. In liaising with staff in UCD Special Collections and Archives, I present to students primary manuscript sources of texts, the printed forms of which we read and discuss in class, and this material complements, in particular, modules offered by colleagues in History and Early Modern English. My brief also extends to contemporary texts, e.g. to the Autobiography and the Short Story in Irish. My course on the former always sparks impromptu debates about whether autobiography and truth can co-exist, given that selection, processing and recall are fundamental to memory. Students of the latter are presented with the evolution of the short story as a genre, its thematic range, role of narrator, challenges posed for the reader etc. Presenting the contemporary writer as guest speaker to students has proved particularly fruitful. |
| An important part of my personal development as a teacher includes attending workshops on teaching and curriculum design in my own discipline. This proves particularly fruitfuil in the case of courses relating to pre-1900 Ireland, and my attendance at an annual one-day workshop organized and hosted in UCC has transformed my teaching in this area. My teaching of medieval texts now includes an important visual component, in that I have introduced ISOS (Irish Script on Screen) to my teaching on medieval Irish texts and their manuscript sources. ISOS makes digital images of Irish manuscripts accessible and also gives details about their repositories, thereby providing students with exposure of a vital part of Ireland¿s cultural heritage. In considering my role as a University teacher over the past twenty-five years, I have come to believe that a Modern Irish degree must offer students more than just a simple understanding of topics addressed by me in class. I now maintain that students must draw on skills which they can develop and carry into their own working lives and to this end, my assessment strategies help students develop their skills of writing, public speaking and technology. |
