Effective assessment strategies are an important element in teaching enhancement. This follows on the principles of self evaluation for the student and the teacher, allowing both to assess progress and challenges. Alongside conventional examination and continuous assessment methods, I have developed assessments in Irish media which vary from essay writing to journalistic port folios, and presentations. I encourage and promote collaborative group projects for assessment in undergraduate modules. I have devised new courses (DiopSCG / MASCG), and methods of assessment in postgraduate teaching, including assessment by employers and reviews by students on work placements. Students are required to write detailed reports based on a template that would be used for a funding proposal encompassing concrete methods in the review of the workplace in the context of Irish language skills. Both students and employers are provided with forms which I have devised using international criteria and research on self-evaluation. As Ireland Canada University Foundation Senior Visiting Professor in St Mary¿s University, Halifax,I was exposed to students and public audiences from different backgrounds and levels of education, alongside having to research new material and present it in an interesting, inspiring way to ensure full engagement with students. This resulted in significant review of current curriculum structure and content in courses in UCD, improving my role and my practices as an academic lecturer in Irish language, and Irish Studies, the department within which I worked in SMU.
Many undergraduate and postgraduate modules which I coordinate were founded initially by me to provide a complete new suite of options for students. It is important to create links within the discipline to enhance the relevance of the material for the student, putting it in their domain and in a way that makes the course more interesting for them. The undergraduate modules can serve as an introduction to postgraduate study, enhancing the concept of lifelong learning, and ensuring higher standards of graduates who are genuinely enthused about the subject area. I devised the MASCG on my own initiative, seeking university and department approval, and funding initially, subsequently building on this to provide the suite of masters which now claims one of the highest student intakes in postgraduate courses in the School (SICSIFL). The most encouraging element of the new courses is the range of student profile, ranging from students who have just completed an undergraduate degree, to people from all age groups and all walks of life. This is part of my commitment to meet the needs of a university education of lifelong learning, adding significant depth to the quality and commitment to teaching. Peer review is as important for teaching as for research. My teaching and academic career to date has been a journey of continual self-improvement, engaging self-evaluation methods and strategies on a continuous basis, as the reflective teacher. Likewise it is equally as important that the students take an active role in their own learning, acknowledging the lifelong experience. Central to good teaching is the ownership of the work and learning, and therefore the creation of opportunities for students to learn from each other through group/paired work creating forums for discussion, while also retaining the integrity of individual learning, is paramount to review and enhancement of curriculum.
1. Development of courses MASCG, DiopSCG, suite of undergraduate modules, which have been acknowledged at a national and international level, and endorsed by funding, supporting government and European policies in language education. 2. Development of teaching aids and methods. I was a tutor on the OILTE project, 'Organising In-Service Training for Languages and Technology in Education' (ITÉ /NCTE /DCU), for training teachers in using technology in language teaching. 3.Development of written materials and supporting teaching material based on research. This also aids in helping to understand how to read texts from the late nineteenth century and the Revival period, understanding issues of orthography and syntax. 4. I initially trained as a primary school teacher and have significant experience in the classroom at all levels. My previous teaching experience has been of immense benefit in the management of, and in the creation of dynamic and modern teaching methods for module enhancement, particularly during the period of intense activity in establishing a centre of excellence for Irish language scholarship. 5. I have participated actively in curriculum development in third level language and literature courses at a national and international level, including conferences in St Patrick's College, Drumcondra, NUIM, ICERI Madrid, and University of Ottawa, Canada.
The setting up and the management of the suite of Masters / Diploma courses in Writing and Communication in Irish has opened many pathways for students of Modern Irish, and for students in other disciplines to study Irish. It is important to update on current trends in society and education to lead today's university students, creating openings for innovation and leadership on a continuous basis.
