Liam Mac Mathúna took Celtic Studies in University College, Dublin, where he received the degree of BA in 1969, of MA in 1970. Awarded a Travelling Studentship by the National University of Ireland, he studied Comparative Indo-European Linguistics under Professor Wolfgang Meid at Innsbruck University, being conferred with a doctorate in 1974 for a lexical field analysis of the topographical vocabulary of Old Irish. He taught Celtic languages at Uppsala University, 1974-76, before being appointed a lecturer in Irish in St Patrick¿s College, Drumcondra, Dublin, in 1976. He served as Registrar of St Patrick¿s College from 1995 to 2006. Although primarily centred on the Early Irish lexicon, his research encompasses the later periods of the Irish language and includes many historical and contemporary facets of the cultural and societal position of Irish, dealing in particular with the intercultural role of place-names and Irish/English literary code-mixing, 1600-1900. His publications include a new edition of An tAthair Peadar Ua Laoghaire¿s novel Séadna. He served as President of the Irish Association for Applied Linguistics (1988-90), President of Comhdháil Náisiúnta na Gaeilge (1992-95) and Chairperson of the Royal Irish Academy¿s Coiste Náisiúnta Léann na Gaeilge (1995-2004). He has also served as a member of Institiúid Teangeolaíochta Éireann (1982-2004), An Coimisiún Logainmneacha (1986-2003) and founding editor of Teagasc na Gaeilge (1980-88), review editor of Teanga, journal of IRAAL (1991-94), as co-editor of Studia Hibernica (1991-2001). Appointed Professor and Head of the School of Irish, Celtic Studies, Irish Folklore and Linguistics, UCD, in 2006, he is also currently a member of the following academic and professional committees: Coiste Léann na Gaeilge, RIA; Coiste Eagarthóireachta Fhoclóir na Nua-Ghaeilge, RIA; Bord Rialúcháin, Scoil an Léinn Cheiltigh, DIAS; Editorial Board, Studia Hibernica; IRCHSS Post-Doctoral Fellowships Renewal panel. |
| Lexical field studies of the vocabulary of Irish, investigating semantic interrelationships and cultural and literary implications in areas such as topography, meteorological phenomena, perceptions of the cosmos, knowledge, poetry and story, and includes the study of Irish place and personal names. The linguistic and literary significance of Irish/English contact, particularly code-mixing in Irish-language texts, 1600-1900. This involves analysis of the literary genres which accommodated English in an ancillary role, and, combining lexical field and discourse analysis, critically assesses the linguistic and literary interaction between the two languages in selected texts.
