Biography

I am a social and cultural historian of modern Italy, with a particular interest in the First World War period and the Italian Futurist movement. My current research project is in the area of migration history, focusing on Italian emigrants during the Great War and the early years of Fascism. Secondary research interests are in 19th-century urban life in Italy and late 19th-century Italian literature. I have also conducted research in the European modernism and avant-garde movements and language teaching pedagogy.

I would welcome inquiries from prospective Masters and PhD students interested in pursuing postgraduate research in topics related to my research interests.

I have published numerous journal articles and book chapters on my research. My monograph, Italian Futurism and the First World War, was published by University of Toronto Press in 2016. It was one of five non-fiction books shortlisted for The Bridge Book Prize 2017. I am an Associate Editor of the journal First World War Studies and a member of the Executive Committees of the Association for the Study of Modern Italy and the Society for Italian Studies.

I have delivered many invited presentations on my research, including at University of California, Los Angeles (keynote lecture); University of Oxford, King¿s College London, and the University of Edinburgh. I have also delivered invited public talks on my work at the Estorick Collection of Modern Italian Art in London and at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin.

In 2014/15, I was a Fulbright Scholar and ELEVATE: Irish Research Council International Career Development Post-Doctoral Researcher (co-funded by Marie Curie Actions) at the Department of French and Italian, University of California, Santa Barbara.  I previously held research and teaching positions at University College Dublin (School of History) and Manchester Metropolitan University (School of Languages).
