Biography

Studies
I completed my undergraduate studies in French and German at Trinity College Dublin (BA Mod) and my postgraduate studies at the Université de Paris VII, Denis Diderot (DEA) and the Université de Paris VIII, Vincennes-Saint-Denis (Doctorat ès Lettres). I held a research studentship at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris for three years and my doctoral studies were also supported by a two-year scholarship awarded by the French Government.
Appointments
While completing my doctoral studies, I worked as a lectrice d'anglais for two years at the Université de Paris III (Sorbonne Nouvelle) and for two years as a Lecturer in French and German at the Dundalk Institute of Technology, before spending five  years lecturing in French at NUI Maynooth. I was appointed to a lectureship at UCD in 1991, with various stints spent researching, examining and teaching in various other universities, mainly in France and the UK.
Research
My first two monographs were published by Gallimard (Paris) in 1998 and Oxford University Press in 2002. In 1999 I organised an international conference on Caribbean literature in French and this eventually issued in an edited book of essays in 2003, published by Rodopi (Amsterdam). From 2005 I led a PRTLI-funded research project for the Humanities Institute of Ireland at UCD, co-organising five international conferences there along with three colleagues from French Studies in UCD. This collaborative project eventually yielded a total of six published volumes, including a special issue of the UK journal, Modern and Contemporary France (co-edited with Dr Douglas Smith) and two volumes of essays, one on the sense and presence of the subject in contemporary poetry in French, and the other on the work of migrancy, both co-edited with Dr Michael Brophy.
In 2002 and 2003 I brought out critical, annotated editions of French translations of the Creole writings of Lafcadio Hearn and in 2004-05 was awarded an Irish Research Council Senior Fellowship to carry out further research on the writings of Hearn. This work is still ongoing, but in 2008 I published an edited volume of essays on the poet(h)ics of globalization with the University of Toronto press and in 2012 a study of the compromising of academic values in 21st-century universities.

Research

Research Interests

My research interests lie in four main areas:

firstly, 20th century writing in French from outside France, principally the Caribbean and Canada, but also Tunisia;

secondly, 20th century writing in French by women;

thirdly, early twentieth-century introspective writing (Proust, Valéry, Colette...);

fourthly, twentieth-century migrant writing in French.

However, further research interests that fall outside these areas are the Creole writings of Lafcadio Hearn and the writing of Emmanuel Levinas.

Recent Postgraduates

Almost without exception, my contribution to postgraduate supervision has been made outside UCD.

1. I have acted as external examiner for doctorates in several universities in Ireland, the UK and France, and have also examined doctoral theses from students registered at universities in Sweden and Australia.
2. My work at the University of Cergy-Pontoise as visiting professor involved reading the work of doctoral students there, meeting with these students and advising them.
3. I was involved for several years in the assessment of applications from Irish-based doctoral students for IRCHSS funding.
4. I am currently supervising a PhD on Caribbean and Migrant writing in French and am co-supervising a doctoral student registered at the Université de Guyane (studying the English translations of the poetry of L.G. Damas).

My only real opportunities for involvement with postgraduate students at UCD has been at Masters level. I have given a Masters seminar which has usually attracted more Erasmus students from France than Irish students. I have supervised minor Masters theses and in particular have acted as internal examiner for a large number of these submissions. In addition I examined minor Masters theses in my role as External Examiner at the Queen's University Belfast.

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

My philosophy is to give of my very best to my teaching and to encourage my students to give of their best to their studies. That means showing them how to respect and how to relish the academic detail and depth of their subject.

Enhancement of Teaching

My lecturing in particular was enhanced by the new audio-visual facilities, particularly the document reader, made available in lecture theatres in the Newman Building. The judicious use of Blackboard has also been a huge help in communicating with students and in enabling them to get access to useful learning materials. Student feedback has also been helpful, but I have not found centralised student feedback mechanisms as useful as feedback collected anonymously from students in class. In general, students are generous about contributing feedback directly, whereas in centralised online surveys response rates are 25-35% only. I am currently involved in designing a textbook and already this exercise is enhancing my pedagogical practice.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

A very large part of the curriculum in my subject relates to the teaching of skills in spoken and written French. We are educating after all, amongst others, the next generation of teachers of French. I am engaged with my colleagues in a constant Herculean struggle to set and maintain standards in this respect. Everybody knows about the national decline in literacy standards. Imagine trying to achieve high literacy standards in a second language! Apart from collaborative language teaching, I have been and continue to be involved in co-designing and co-teaching core courses on French-language culture (and in using these as supplementary ways of teaching the French language). For example, first-year literature survey courses. This does not mean that I've not invested a lot of time in designing and renewing more specialist courses. Over the years, I've taught collaboratively on several specialist courses: Women's Writing, the work of Marcel Proust and an MA course on Migrant Writing (Écriture migrante). I have also taught the latter course solo. In all my courses, MA or undergraduate, I regularly introduce new material (ie. change the core texts) including works by Canadian, Haitian, Tunisian authors or writers with an Indian Ocean or Vietnamese background. Other solo courses that I've taught include MA courses on the Early 20th Century Introspective Novel (Colette, Paul Valéry and Marcel Proust) and undergraduate courses on New World or American Writing (Canadian and Caribbean literature in French).

Developing as a Teacher

As a younger teacher, I had (no doubt unjustifiably but possibly beneficially) high levels of confidence in my own abilities and vocation as a teacher. Since the end of the nineties and since 2004/5 in particular, a new emphasis on the processes and on the assessment both of learning and of teaching could have proved distracting, were it not for the necessity for those involved in teaching language (speaking, understanding, reading and writing) to retain a very strong sense of the extent and limits of their own teaching abilities. So although I believe that both teachers and students are over-assessed and that the processes of learning and of teaching are being over-emphasised at the expense of the student's own long-term investment in, and commitment to, a rigorous grasp of the detail and depth of their subject. I think that teachers of language are more aware than most of the value of what they are attempting to do and of the challenges inherent in their work.

Innovation & Leadership

I place my faith in: 1. perpetual and creative (self)renewal; and collaboration and collegiality. 'Leadership' in teaching is an oxymoron in much the same way as 'Leadership' in parenting. Still, it may be possible to show 'leadership' in teaching by placing one's role as 'teacher' if not at the heart of one's work, then close to it.
