Biography

A graduate of St. Anne's College, Oxford, I took First Class Honours with a distinction in spoken Spanish, and then in 1997 completed my DPhil on 'Dissidence and the Spanish Literary Canon in the Later Fiction of Juan Goytisolo'. Since 1995 I have lectured in Spanish at UCD, specializing in contemporary Spanish and Portuguese narrative, although I have also taught Latin American literature, Golden-Age literature, and linguistics. Recent publications include a monograph on Juan Goytisolo (2005), essays on Luis Martín-Santos, a co-authored book on Carmen Martín Gaite (2008), and an edited volume of essays on war and memory in contemporary Spain (2009). My current research interests include representations of war and dictatorship in contemporary Spanish and Portuguese culture, for which I held an IRCHSS Research Fellowship in 2005-06. A co-edited volume of essays, Legacies of War and Dictatorship in Contemporary Spain and Portugal has just been published, and in 2011 I was a Visiting Research Fellow at the Institute of Germanic and Romance Studies, University of London.
