Research Projects

  • Government of Ireland Senior Research Fellowship Project (2009-2010): "Language, identity and interculturalism in Ireland", funded by Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences. The project compares identity, migration and sociolinguistic competence by investigating language use in the Polish and Italian communities in urban centres in Ireland (both the ¿older¿ migrant community of Italians from the 1950¿s and the new wave of recent arrivals) and the Polish community, who are newly arrived. The project uses sociolinguistic models to provide a detailed analysis of how both migrant and ¿traditional¿ Irish negotiate and construct identities through language, with implications for how Irish society manages social and linguistic diversity.
  • "Second language acquisition and native language maintenance in the Polish diaspora in Ireland and France". Irish Research Council for Humanities and Social Sciences, Thematic Research Project Grant 2007-2010, jointly with Trinity College Dublin.
  • participant in "Memory and Representations of the Past in Quebec and Ireland" workshops, jointly funded by the Irish Research Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences and FQRSC (Fonds de recherche sur la société et la culture).
