Biography

Dr. Marie-Luce Paris is lecturer in law at the UCD Sutherland School of Law. Marie-Luce's primary research interests are in European human rights law, European Union institutional, comparative constitutional law and global constitutionalism generally. She has also an interest in legal education. Her work has been published in the Yearbook of European Law, German Law Journal, Irish Journal of European Law, Irish Jurist and European Journal of Legal Education, Revue Internationale de Droit Comparé. She has held research visiting positions at the University of California, Davis School of Law (USA), and the Australian National University Centre for European Studies (Canberra, Australia).

She supervised a PhD on The European Consensus in the Case Law of the European Court of Human Rights. She currently supervises a PhD on the naturalisation policy in Ireland in a comparative perspective. She is interested in hearing from prospective PhD students in the area of European human rights law, European Union constitutional and institutional law, and comparative public law generally (see Research Interests for more).

Marie-Luce received her legal education at Université Panthéon-Assas (Paris II), France's first law faculty. She was awarded a postgraduate research scholarship by the French Minister of Higher Education and Research, a prestigious scholarship awarded to top Master students embarking on doctoral studies. She received the title of Docteur en droit for her PhD on The Implementation of the European Convention on Human Rights by the United Kingdom. She obtained her professional qualification as a Barrister-at-Law from the Ecole D'Avocats Du Barreau De La Cour D'Appel De Paris, and worked as a trainee in law firms and at the Commercial Court in Paris. She is a graduate of the Magistère de Juriste d'Affaires DJCE. Marie-Luce joined UCD School of Law to teach in, and later direct, the BCL Law with French Law and dual degree BCL/Maîtrise programmes which aim at training UCD law students to the French civil law system. Marie-Luce teaches on a number of undergraduate and graduate courses which include ECHR Law, Comparative Constitutional Law, Introduction to Comparative Legal Studies, and French Constitutional Law.

Marie-Luce is currently the Academic Director of two French Law Programmes: the BCL Law with French Law and the BCL/Maîtrise (law dual degree). She just finished two terms (2010-13, 2013-16) as Head of International Cooperation. In this capacity, she led major projects to enhance the internationalisation of the School. These projects include the establishment of a Graduate Exchange Programme in Comparative, International and European Law (CIEL) in partnership with leading European universities, the expansion of Graduate Exchange Programmes with USA and Australian Law Schools, and the development of links with top law schools in China.

Marie-Luce's primary research interests are in comparative constitutional law, European human rights law, and European Union institutional and constitutional law. Her current research focus is on constitutional courts and constitutional review systems in a comparative approach. She also researches on the interaction between national and European legal systems with particular analysis of the effects of European norms, whether derived from the European Union or the European Convention on Human Rights legal orders, on national constitutional arrangements. She has also an interest in legal education. Her work has been published in the Yearbook of European Law, German Law Journal, Irish Jurist, Irish Journal of European Law, European Journal of Legal Education and Revue Internationale de Droit Comparé.

Marie-Luce is a regular speaker at international conferences, having presented her work in Ireland, the UK, continental Europe, North America, Australia and China. She has held research visiting positions at the University of California, Davis School of Law (USA) and the Australian National University Centre for European Studies (Canberra, Australia). She was a member of the Academy of European Public Law, EPLO (2000-2001). She is a member of the Irish Society of Comparative Law and French Société de Législation Comparée. She is the national representative for Ireland for the International Academy of Comparative Law. She is a member of the The Society of Legal Scholars and of the UCD Human Rights Network and the UCD Constitutional Studies Group.

Innovation & Leadership

I have been awarded the UCD Graduate Diploma in UT&L in 2008 which aims at supporting academic staff in their teaching and learning development. I have also published in high standing international outlets on legal education, most recently: 'Small Goes Global: The Internationalisation of Legal Education in Ireland' (Springer 2016) and 'Legal Education in Ireland: A Paradigm Shift to the Practical?' (2010) 11 German Law Journal 1067.
