I graduated from the University of Kent at Canterbury in 1999 with a degree in Mathematics and Management Science. I subsequently undertook a Master's Degree in Statistics, graduating in 2000. From 2000-2002 I worked as a statistician for the British Market Research Bureau (later taken over by Millward Brown) in London. In 2002 I started a PhD in statistics at the University of Sheffield working with Professor Clive Anderson on the Bayesian analysis of relative sea level change. I completed the PhD in 2005 and graduated in 2006. From 2005-2008 I was a research fellow at Trinity College Dublin working with Professor John Haslett on palaeoclimate reconstruction. In 2008 I was appointed Lecturer in Statistics in the School of Mathematical Sciences in UCD, gaining tenure in 2011.
Palaeoclimate reconstruction My main field of research is in the statistical reconstruction of palaeoclimate from proxy data. As part of the SUPRAnet group, I work on combining multiple climate indicators such as pollen, tree rings and bore-holes with climate model output to understand sources of uncertainty related to our understanding of climate. This research involves a substantial computing element, and combines ideas in stochastic processes, statistical emulators, extremes and long-tailed distributions. Statistical ecology My interest in statistical ecology concerns Bayesian compositional modelling of data from stable isotope experiments on ecosystems. Through this research we have developed the widely-used R computer package SIAR. Proteomics As part of the SFI/SBI/IRCSET-funded Bioinformatics PhD scheme, I am involved in a project developing model-based machine learning methods for biomarker discovery. The methods enable better prediction of the occurrence and severity of prostate cancers.

My lecturing style is based around a structured yet relaxed environment where students do not feel embarrassed to ask further questions on the material. I try to make myself available to students beyond lecturing hours as often as possible. My lectures tend to consist of printed notes or slides (available on Blackboard) for the students to read before the lecture. Gaps in the notes are filled in during class to ensure full participation with the material. I supplement these notes with computer labs and tutorial exercise sheets which students are expected to complete in their own time and hand in on a weekly basis. I have found this recipe to be hugely successful and have many positive feedback comments from both students and external examiners.
