| Claire Gormley's research interests are in mixture models, latent variable models, computational statistics and Bayesian statistics. Her research to date has mainly focused on Irish voting data and third level college applications data. Both these areas involve ranking data which arise when a set of judges are asked to rank some or all of a set of objects. Mixture models are employed as a model-based clustering technique to highlight subpopulations and their characteristic traits. The Plackett-Luce model for rank data, and Benter's model, are fitted using the EM-algorithm. Much of this work is computationally intensive and involves techniques such as the MM algorithm. Latent space models model judges and objects as being located within the same latent space. This research is set within a Bayesian framework. Grade of membership models (otherwise known as mixed membership models) and mixtures-of-experts models are also of interest. Product partition models to estimate the means of sets of a partition are currently being examined with applications in the medical/genetics field. The application of novel clustering and classification methods to the analysis of high dimensional metabolomic data is also of current interest. |
