| Dr. Gabrielle Kelly is a senior lecturer in statistics and her research interests are in the development of statistical models that are scientifically and practically useful. She has applied her research in many scientific fields including medical clinical research, physiology, veterinary epidemiology and microbiology, biopharmacy, survey sampling and quality control. She has a particular interest in survival models, mixed models and spatial models. She also has experience in the analysis of microarray data. Dr. Kelly is part of a research group investigating bovine TB in Ireland, involving the Centre for Veterinary Epidemiology and Risk Analysis, UCD and the government Dept. of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (DAFF). The group has published several papers of international significance on the role of the badger in bovine TB, a topic which receives widespread media coverage. She currently has 1 Ph.D. student working in this area. Dr. Kelly has consulted widely with both government Dept. of Health and Children and Dept. of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and with industry, including Vivasure Medical Ltd., Trinity Biotech, Allergan Botox, Chiroxia, Dublin Assay Office, CVRL Abbotstown, and with physicians in St. Jamesâ¿TM, St. Vincents, the Mater, the Coombe and Holles St. hospitals. She served as the statistician on the UCD Animal Research Ethics Committee for 2 years. She was also secretary of the Irish Statistical Association from 2002-2006. She is the statistical extern for the School of Computing in Dublin City University. Specific current interests: My main research interests are in the areas of survival analysis, spatial analysis and generalized linear mixed models (glmm's). In addition I have a specific interest in many aspects of the change-point problem in regression. In the area of survival analysis I have co-authored papers with a Ph.D. student on generalized Cox models and frailty models. In particular I have published on nonparametric random effects distributions for glmm's and nonparametric frailty distributions in the case of survival analysis. I have been working for some time with the UCD Centre for Veterinary Epidemiology and Risk Analysis on the problem of bovine TB and the role of the badger Meles meles. The Four Area Project was a large scale field trial undertaken by the Dept. of Agriculture and Food that examined this question. Survival analysis techniques that could be used to look at time to breakdown of a herd were of particular relevance. I was one of the leading authors on the primary paper to come out of that trial, published in the journal of Preventive Veterinary Medicine. It is in the top three of the most downloaded papers for that journal. Recently I have analyzed these data from a spatial analysis viewpoint - i.e. using GIS coordinates and a paper has been published in relation to badgers with another in relation to cattle submitted for publication. I have used generalized linear geostatistical models in this work. In the area of glmm's I have directed the work of another Ph.D. student on h-likelihood. This is a relatively new and very powerful concept in this area. We have applied the techniques to the analysis of milk yields in relation to bovine TB, where the data is of a hierarchical structure - repeated observations on animals within herds and thus these techniques are invaluable. This work was funded by a scholarship from the Dept. of Agriculture and Food. I also work on the change-point problem in regression for which I have received SFI RFP funds. One of the approaches being pursued is a Bayesian analysis with the use of the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm. Novel results are being developed with this approach, with a specific application to physiology data and cystic fibrosis patients. I am the statistician for the research group lead by Dr. Leonie Young a surgeon at RCSI (formerly UCD Conway), who are at the forefront of research on breast cancer. We have published in high quality journals such as Cancer Research and the British Journal of Cancer. They have welcomed novel insights I brought to their work with for example the use of regression trees. My interest in statistical research are varied and have changed over the years. I try to keep abreast of all new developments as inevitably they impact on one's own research interest. In addition new technologies particularly in the areas of biotechnology and bioinformatics have lead to new developments in statistics, as also have GIS information systems and the accessability of large databases. I have directed two minor theses in the area of bioinformatics in the analysis of microarray data and have attended a workshop on this topic. I have done some work with Dr. P. Lindsey, Dept. of Population Genetics, Genomics and Bioinformatics, University of Maastricht on microarray data from Dr. McHugh, UCD Animal Science, during a research visit to him June 2005. I have supervised 14 minor M.A./M.Sc. theses since coming to UCD on many topics including those listed above as well as cluster analysis, discriminant analysis, estimating the size of the AIDS epidemic, robust regression , over-dispersion and logit models for ordinal responses. From 1998-2001 I used my research funds to sponsor visits (1 week per year) of Professor Jim Lindsey to UCD. Professor Lindsey has an international reputation and it has been my privilege to work with him and co-author several papers. The overall aim of my research is to develop models that are scientifically and practically useful. Thus I believe it is important to keep abreast of new scientific developments in general as well as new developments in statistics and make a contribution. Funding: Society of Actuaries in Ireland. | The statistician on the Animal Research Ethics Committee 2003-2006. During that time I established a connection with a working group from the RSS constituted by the Central Office for Research Ethics Committees (COREC) UK to consider questions regarding statistics. The group here have found this dialogue very useful. During that time I reviewed approximately 120 protocols and due to my input the numbers of animals requested often changed considerably. | |||||||||
| Administrative Experience: I have organized exams within the Dept. of Statistics since 1999 and am now exams co-ordinator for the School of Mathematical Sciences. I serve on the Teaching and Learning sub-committee of the School. I served on the promotions board for Senior Lecturer within the College of Engineering, Mathematical and Physical Sciences 2005. I organized the Open Days for the Dept. of Statistics UCD, for two years. I was postgraduate studies co-ordinator of the Statistics Dept. from 1991- 1997. I was the Library representative of the Dept. of Statistics from 1990-2005. I am a first year mentor this year 2006. |
