Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

Primarily I believe for teaching and learning to be really effective they should be enjoyable. Therefore, I try to convey my love of my subject by imparting what I regard as the essence of statistics and emphasize its importance in developments in science and industry with practical illustrations.

Enhancement of Teaching

In a survey of first year students at UCD that I published in the journal Educational Studies, the majority of students felt activity based learning would enhance their learning. Therefore, for example, each year the Dean of Science, Head of College of Science or their Deputies, among others, observe the final session of my Survey Sampling module where the students present their report on Lecture Attendance Survey on a sample of UCD students they have undertaken as part of the module requirement. For me and the students it is a proud moment to have designed and successfully carried out a survey according to scientific principles. Having to design a suitable sampling plan and interpret the results of the survey fosters independent thought and critical thinking in the students. The discussion is usually lively as the report is both useful and of interest to all present - students and university planners. A photo is taken, framed and displayed on one of the School Notice boards. This is activity based learning at its best and though labour intensive it is very rewarding to see the students enjoying the module. The results of the survey are presented at the Science Programme Board. In all modules, based on student feedback, I award at least 20% for continuous assessment. Student feedback indicates this is appreciated as the graded assignments that accompany the lectures keeps them up-to-date with lecture material and is necessary for their understanding. The comments of the external examiner have always been favourable and any comments carefully considered and acted on eg. if a particular question in an exam is answered poorly I reconsider the teaching of that topic; positve feedback reinforces what I'm doing and encourages me to adhere to it.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

Presently several of my modules are delivered to final year and postgradaute students. I am very aware that they will shortly enter the workplace and in all my modules I endeavour to give them knowledge that will be useful in many contexts and the skills to adapt it to the changing demands of the workplace. I have just stood down as the Director of the Taught Postgraduate Programmes in Statistics and based on experiences with applications over the years have introduced a new four-semester M.A. in Statistics. This is unique in both Ireland and the UK and intended to fill a gap in the market to cater for students with a numerate background but who may have insufficient background knowlege to gain entry to the MSc programme. The MA brings students to the same level as the 1 year MSc degree. I have also introduced changes to the minor thesis component that forms part of the M.Sc. in Statistics and a new module Technical Communication is now compulsory. The Taught Postgraduate Programme is continually updated to reflect new module offerings and changes in emphasis in expertise in the discipline and School - this is done in collaboration with colleagues and in particular the Head of Discipline. While at U.C.D. I have developed new courses in Survival Analysis, Nonparametrics and Mathematical Statistics taught at B.Sc./M.Sc. level. The material in the courses incorporates current international research. For example, the Mathematical Statistics reflects aspects of current theoretical thinking in this area. On the other hand, the more applied courses incorporate material for their fields of application. For example, the Survival analysis module reflects applications in the pharmaceutical industry.

Developing as a Teacher

In 2009 I was given a Module Innovation Support Grant from the HEA for development of an activity based learning module the Survey Sampling Module. In recent years students in this module have carried out a survey of the student body at UCD attendance rate at lectures. I publish regularly and thus keep abreast of the latest developments in topics that I teach. I draw on my consulting work to improve the quality of my course content. By attendance at conferences I am in discussion with my peers on new developments and on their approach to subject matter. I also take note of student's course evaluations. I have attended several courses from UCD IT on Blackboard and the different capabilities within it and I use Blakboard extensively. As many of my colleagues retired in recent years I am one of the few people left to carry forward 'best practise' (in the sense that which has been tried and trusted over many years) particularly in relation to our postgraduate programmes, with regard to decisions concerning curriculum, core modules, minor theses presentations and assessments and appointment of extern. I have published and acted as a referee for educational journals (see publications/referee)

Innovation & Leadership

I receievd a HEA Module Innovation Support Award in 2009 to develop my Survey Sampling module into an activity based module. A description of the module has been published in Educational Studies (2010). Another publication in the Journal of Further and Higher Education (2011) discusses factors affecting student attendance at lectures based on student surveys I directed in UCD, reflecting my interest in this area.
