Research

Research Interests

Econometrics, Statistical Issues in Radiological Protection,  Official Statistics, Electoral Behaviour, Survey Design and Analysis, Statistics Education

Dr. Patrick Murphy joined UCD in 1999. Prior to that he held the post of Statistician in the Balance of Payments Division of the Central Statistics Office. He completed his PhD under the supervision of Prof. Yudi Pawitan at the Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm. His main research interests are: The improvement of statistical methodologies for I(1) and I(2) cointegration; Development of new statistical methodologies for use in Radiological Protection in colaboration with the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland, The application of multivariate time-series techniques to Official Statistics in the fields of Economics and Political Science. Dr. Murphy was elected as a member of the International Statistical Institute in 2004 for "contributions to the development and application of statistical methods, the administration of statistical services, and the development and improvement of statistical education".

Teaching

Teaching Philosophy

I am influenced by theories of learning such as social and radical constructivism and by techniques of instruction such as problem based learning and peer assisted learning and am striving to constantly develop and improve my understanding of the instruction/learning process as well as striving to improve as an educator.

Enhancement of Teaching

For many years I have attanded international conferences on Statistics Education and have come to know all of the leaders in this field. I have collaborated with some of them on recent research in Statistics Education. But even before those collboarations I have learned about new and innovative teaching techinques at these conferences. This has led me to incorporate Problem Based Learning techniques as a core part of my courses. I've also incorporated Peer Assisted Learning as an integral part of my modules. In addition I've incorporated new teaching methodologies specific to Statistics such as the introduction of Java Applets and other simulations into my lectures. Many years ago I learned of the benefits of formative assessment and have incorporated such assessments as a core part of all of my modules. I am constantly trying to enhance the experience for my students and the latest addition to my teaching is the development of integrated and high quality online e-learning resources for my modules. These will incorporate online testing for use by students as formative rather than summative assessment.

Review and Enhancement of Curriculum

As the only statistician on the NCCA LC committee for Maths I was responsible for the design of Strand 1 (Statistics) of the new Project Maths curriculum. This strand was informed by my own research in the field of statistics education and my engagement with international researchers in Statistics Education since 2002. This new syllabus is the first proper attempt to incorporate statistics into the Junior and Leaving Certificates. The syllabus I designed is informed by my involvement in the international Statistics Education community which is distinctly different from the Statistics community. Indeed the syllabus meets the GAISE standards of the American Statistical Association for excellence in Statistics Education. As HoTL I created a suite of new modules for the BSc programme. Instead of the traditional approach of one honours and one ordinary programme in Mathematics, I introduced four new targeted programmes (containing suites of modules) in Mathematics: one suite for Computer Science, one for Physical Sciences, one for Mathematical Sciences and one for Biological and Geological Sciences. This revision was the first major change to the way Mathematics was taught in the BSc programme in 40 years. In addition to the reorganisation of the structures to include substantial changes to course content and to introduce PBL and PAL techniques as well as new forms of assessment to create a greater alignment of learning outcomes with the needs of the other disciplines in Science I have completely revised the BSc and BA programmes in Statistics to better meet the needs of students and employers and to meet best international IASE practice. I¿ve also played a key role in revising the School¿s offerings in Agriculture, Business and Engineering.

Developing as a Teacher

Since I first attended the International Conference on Teaching Statistics in South Africa in 2002, I have become colleagues through the IASE with all of the main researchers in the international Statistics Education community and through my connections I have brought substantial innovations to my teaching at UCD and to my role as a curriculum leader. I have been invited to speak at all of the major international Statistics Education conferences and at the Irish Conference on Engaging Pedagogy. I have published many peer-reviewed conference papers in the field of Statistics Education. I have been a referee/reviewer for this journal (Statistics Education Research Journal) since 2007. I was part of the organising committee for the Irish Conference on Engaging Pedagogy in 2009 and 2010. In order to create a wider awareness in Ireland among statistics educator, I played a major role in organising a conference on Statistics Education at UCD in 2010 where the keynote speaker was Joan Garfield one of the pre-eminent researchers in the field of Statistics Education. I have also participated in many courses organised by UCD Teaching and Learning since 1999.

Innovation & Leadership

I have taken academic leadership since arriving in UCD thatleadership extended to all courses in Mathematical Sciences when I took on the roles of Head of Teaching and Learning and Head of School. I've innovated using new e-learning techniques but also through the introduction of PBL and PAL techniques in our courses. I've incorporated new principles from best international practice gained through my membership of the International Association for Statistics Education. The IASE has appointed me to leadership roles.
