Biography

Aoibhinn is an Assistant Professor in the School of Mathematics & Statistics where she lectures in Mathematics Education on the BSc. Science, Mathematics and Education and Professional Masters in Education and in undergraduate Mathematics. Her research investigates issues in Mathematics Education, with particular focus on teacher education and the development of teacher pedagogical content knowledge. Lesson study, a Japanese model of teacher professional development, forms a large part of her research and she has been involved in a number of Irish-based and international lesson study projects. As a former post-primary teacher and  physics graduate, Aoibhinn is also interested in gender and socioeconomic equity issues within the teaching of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics). Following on from her extensive experience as a science communicator on TV, radio and in print, she is also interested in research on public engagement in science and in 2017 won the SFI Outsanding Contribution to STEM Communication Award.

Aoibhinn has published nationally and internationally on her research and plays an active role in a number of national and international networks. She i
s a member of the STEM Education Policy Review Group of the Department of Education & Skills and is also a member of the Project Maths Implementation Support Group (DES). She is a member of the Irish Mathematical Society Education sub-committee and the CERME (Congress of European Researchers in Mathematics Education) International Programme committee. She is also an executive committee member of the national WITS (Women in Technology and Science) group and is a member of Science Gallery Dublin's National Education Committee.

Aoibhinn has successfully won funding from SFI Discover for the past number of years to promote the subject of mathematics to students from schools designated as socio-economically disadvantaged (DEIS), through the Maths Sparks programme involving undergraduate students and academic staff from the UCD School of Mathematics and Statistics (https://www.ucd.ie/mathstat/mathsparks/). In 2016, she was a recipient of the Charlemont Grant, awarded by the Royal Irish Academy, to support her research on lesson study with the Laboratoire Lausannois Lesson Study (3LS) in Switzerland and in 2015 she was awarded SEED funding from the UCD College of Science to disseminate her research work on implementing mathematics curriculum reform through lesson study and was a successful co-applicant of SPARC funding from UCD Teaching & Learning to developing student-staff links within the UCD School of Mathematical Sciences. She was a successful co-applicant for SFI Discover funding for the large-scale Dart of Physics public outreach project in 2013 (www.dartofphysics.ie) and was co-director of an extension of this outreach initiative, City of Physics (www.cityofphysics.ie). In 2011, she was awarded the prestigious Ussher Fellowship from Trinity College Dublin for her doctoral thesis on mathematics teacher learning, incorporating the post-primary mathematics curriculum reform, and won funding from the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA) to support the case study schools participating in her thesis research.

Aoibhinn is renowned for her role as a science communicator and for her  promotion of STEM subjects, particularly for young women. In 2017, she was named as one of the 40 leaders under 40 European Young Leaders for 2017 (nominated for her prominent role in promoting the sciences, particularly for young women), was named as one of the 365 Women in STEM, and was also noted by the Royal Society as a prominent woman in STEM as part of Ada Lovelace Day. In 2016 and 2014, Silicon Republic also named her as one of the Top 50 Women in Science in Ireland. She engages in very many voluntary outreach events ranging from hosting the Hamilton Day interviews at the Royal Irish Academy, to judging at the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition. In 2013 she co-curated an exhibition entitled RISK Lab (2013) with Pr David Spiegelhalter, University of Cambridge, which was one of the most popular lab exhibitions held in Science Gallery Dublin.

Aoibhinn graduated with a first class honours degree in Theoretical Physics from UCD in 2005 and achieved first class honours in her Postgraduate Diploma in Education from Trinity College Dublin in 2008. As a qualified Mathematics, Physics, Applied Mathematics, and Junior Cycle Science teacher, she taught in St. Mark's Community School for a number of years while also working as a facilitator delivering professional development in the new post-primary 'Project Maths' curriculum. She maintains close links with post-primary teachers and schools through her research, in her role as a teacher educator and through her involvement with teacher groups.
