Biography

Dr Ahearne has a primary degree in Mechanical Engineering, a Master's Degree in Engineering Management and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree by research in the field of Manufacturing Engineering. He has over 20 years experience in industry and 15 in academia. After graduating as a Mechanical Engineer, he was employed by Donnelly Mirrors Ltd., a subsidiary of a US multinational company supplying "vision systems" to the global automotive industry. His roles at Donnelly included as Manufacturing Engineer, Research and Development Manager and Engineering Manager. After Donnelly, he set up an Engineering Design company, Setanta Design International Ltd., and operated in the roles of Managing Director and Engineering Director. He subsequently joined Green Isle Foods (GIF) Ltd. as Group Process Development Manager responsible for projects across all GIF plants.  His roles in industry involved management of a wide range of projects with different levels of scale and uncertainty. In particular, he has been responsible for many successful research and development projects, providing competitive advantage through new knowledge and innovation.

His interest in Project Management is matched by an enduring interest in Science and Engineering. A common theme throughout his career, both in industry and academia, has been an interest, and research focus, on the complex fundamental mechanisms in manufacturing processes; the very mechanisms that determine the quality and precision of engineering components. While recognised as a corporate expert in glass processing science and technologies at Donnelly Mirrors Ltd., it was not until he moved to academia in 2001 that he was able to formally express this interest through open research and publication. He completed doctoral studies after joining UCD, submitting a topical thesis titled "Modelling and Simulation of the Rotational Grinding Process". He has since authored over 50 publications on materials processing and more general topics in manufacturing engineering, also developing strong international networks as Associate Member of "The International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP)". Since joining UCD, he has secured over 4M Euros in funding for research projects and infrastructure.  Most of the research projects involved collaborations with high end manufacturing industry and delivered patents, know-how and significant returns to industry partners.

Dr Ahearne has lectured at undergraduate level over the past ten years on the introductory and advanced modules in Manufacturing Engineering, contributing to the advanced module by introducing lecture topics based on industry needs and advocated by accreditation bodies as important for the professional Manufacturing Engineer. These include; Innovation and R&D Management, Lean Design and Manufacturing and "International Standards and Standardisation". He developed a portfolio of case studies to simulate the roles of the Manufacturing Engineer in industry, many involving management level decision scenarios. He pioneered the introduction of further topics, case studies and laboratories on Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) and Computer Numerical Control (CNC), supported by research and demonstrations on facilities awarded through his efforts including a unique five axis Mori Seiki CNC Machining Centre and Esprit CAM software. He collaborated with academic colleagues to introduce the new UCD "Learning Factory" which has significant potential for development of "learning by doing" modules for engineering and business programmes. In 2016, he was assigned responsibility for the "Engineering Project Management" and "Research Skills and Techniques" modules providing exciting opportunities for synergy of his industry and academic experience.

Research

Research Interests

Dr Ahearne's research interests are motivated by the need to understand the complex fundamental mechanisms in machining of advanced engineering materials in order to cost effectively produce surfaces of extreme precision, finish and integrity. In particular, he has undertaken research into the fundamental mechanisms in cutting, grinding and polishing, using both modelling and empirical approaches. At a fundamental level, he is interested in the tribo-chemical mechanisms involved in friction and wear in these processes. 
He has also pioneered the strategic approach of integration of sensor technologies into machine tools and tooling in order to improve real time monitoring of process phenomena. More recently, he has been collaborating with the UCD Insight Centre to develop advanced data analytics approaches for prediction of process performance with the long term vision of autonomous learning and intelligent process control.
