Biography

Dr. Michael O'Byrne is a postdoctoral research fellow in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering, University College Dublin. His areas of interest and expertise lie in image processing and pattern recognition for structural health monitoring applications. In recent years, he has worked on developing image-based strategies for monitoring offshore structures and marine renewable energy devices. Michael is a Civil Engineering graduate from University College Cork (UCC). He received his doctorate from Trinity College Dublin, after which, he returned to UCC as a postdoctoral research fellow. Michael has several first author publications in journals with high impact factor and has acted as a peer-reviewer on multiple occasions for highly-regarded international journals. He is a member of the International Network on Offshore Renewable Energy (INORE) and Civil Engineering Research Association of Ireland (CERAI). Michael has delivered invited talks at the SmartLAB Seminar (Kerry, 2016) and the National Sustainability Summit (Dublin, 2017) on the topic of Imaging in Subsea Inspections. He also participates regularly in research projects that cross over into other fields, both with private and public funding. On top of his research activities, he has experience in  supervising students of all levels, lecturing undergraduate courses, and conducting lab demonstrations. His work is supported by Science Foundation Ireland and CAPACITÉS.
