Neal Murphy joined the staff of UCD in 1989 having completed an MEngSc in Robotics a couple of years earlier. Since then, his main area of interest has been Mechanics of Materials, to which he has subjected hoards of undergraduate engineering students over the past two decades. Following a chance encounter in the early 1990s with the eminent Prof. Bertram Broberg, late of Lund University and UCD, he developed a keen interest in Fracture Mechanics which has dominated his research activities to date. In 2007 he was awarded a PhD from UCD. The title of his thesis was "Dynamic Fracture of PMMA: A Combined Experimental and Numerical Investigation", which was supervised by Prof. Alojz Ivankovic, formally of Imperial College London and now at UCD. His current research activities include the fracture behaviour of structural adhesives and composite materials (both experimental and computational analysis), and the brittle fracture of PCBN and PCD cutting tools at a wide range of loading rates and temperatures. External interests include tennis, gardening, and sampling as wide a variety of wines as possible. He is married with two children. |
| Mechanical and fracture characterization of a wide variety of materials as diverse as nano-toughened adhesives, fibre-reinforced composites, timber, and superhard cutting tool materials such as PCBN and PCD at a wide range of loading rates and temperatures. Much of our research focuses on the so-called structure-property relationship of materials where an attempt is made to link a macroscopic property such as the fracture toughness to the processes which are taking place at a microstructural level such as nano-void formation, growth and coalescence. In order to gain insight into material behaviour inside the fracture process zone, extensive use is made of analytical tools such as scanning electron microscopy in conjunction with computational models based on the non-linear finite element (FE) or finite volume (FV) numerical methods. These numerical simulations are typically carried out on our supercomputer which enables large problems to be solved in an efficient manner by distributing the calculations over many processors in parallel. |

| The majority of current research activities are in collaboration with Prof Alojz Ivankovic, who supervised my own recent PhD thesis in the are of dynamic fracture of brittle polymers. We are involved in a wide range of interesting research projects from the fracture characteristics of structural adhesives and composite materials to those of cutting tools for the drilling and machining industries. We are also collaborating on bioengineering topics such as damage evolution in lungs subjected to dynamic loading conditions. |
| Recent collaborators include Dr D. R. Moore and Prof. J. G. Williams of the Mechanical Engineering Department, Imperial College London.This research is focused on the development of the Mandrel Peel Test for determination of the fracture energy of flexible laminates. |
