Biography

Dr. Vincent Hargaden was appointed Assistant Professor in Engineering Management in October 2011, 20 years after entering UCD as a first year undergraduate engineering student. In the intervening period he completed the BE (Mechanical) degree and then pursued a two year masters by research at the Computer Integrated Manufacturing Research Unit (CIMRU) at NUI Galway. Around this time, European companies were starting to focus on the emerging requirement to manage end-of-life products in their supply chains. This led to an EU FP4 project Product Acquisition from Waste Streams (PAWS) which provided the basis for research funding, a masters thesis (MEngSc) and a curiosity about supply chain management. There followed eight years employment in industry in a variety of roles including design of plastic moulding and metal stamping tools for quality writing instruments and early (1990s) versions of portable digital notepads, supplier quality, project engineering and supply chain management in high volume ICT equipment manufacturing environments. While in industry, he completed an MBA at the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School from 2001-2003. The final thesis, supervised by Dr. Donna Marshall, led to a supply chain conference paper (IPSERA 2004) and re-ignited his interest in academic research. An opportunity arose in 2004 to begin lecturing in UCD on a part-time basis in the School of Business and the School of Electrical, Electronic & Mechanical Engineering in the area of Operations and Supply Chain Management. Becoming involved in the research activities of the supply chain group, in particular through the IBM Integrated Supply Chain Consortium led to the inevitable decision to undertake a PhD to pursue an academic career. He graduated in May 2011 with a PhD in Decision Science and Engineering Systems from the Industrial & Systems Engineering Department at Rensselaer, which was supervised by Professor Jennifer Ryan. The doctoral studies were supported in part by a Global IBM PhD Fellowship awarded in the 2010-2011 academic year, which included a summer placement at the IBM Zurich Research Lab.

Since joining the School of Mechanical & Materials Engineering in 2011, he has served as the director of the UCD Master of Engineering Management programme. His teaching interests cover the quantitative aspects of Operations and Supply Chain Management, including Supply Chain Analytics, Supply Chain Design, Operations Strategy, Decision Analysis and Project Management. In 2017, Vincent received a University Teaching Excellence Award and a College of Engineering & Architecture Teaching Excellence Award. The Teaching Excellence Awards recognise individual faculty and staff for sustained commitment to teaching excellence and student learning.

Vincent has three major research themes; Workforce Planning, Design and Optimisation of Supply Chains and Engineering Education. He continues to collaborate closely with colleagues in the supply chain group in the UCD College of Business

Research

Research Interests

Vincent has three major research themes; (1) Workforce Planning, (2) Design and Optimisation of Supply Chains and (3) Engineering Education.

(1) Workforce Planning:

(2) Design and Optimisation of Resilient Supply Chains:

  • He is currently co-PI in the Enterprise Ireland Dairy Processing Technology Centre, which is investigating how the dairy industry partners can design cost competitive supply chains in the EU post milk quota era.
  • He is co-PI in the H2020 VALUMICS (Understanding Food Value Chain and Network Dynamics).
  • Within the Horizon 2020 (H2020) Secure Societies theme, he is interested in relevant supply chain and workforce planning topics in the Disaster Resilience (DRS) and Border Security (BES) calls. This builds on previous supply chain risk and resilience work carried out within the UCD-IBM Integrated Supply Chain Consortium.
  • Factory of the Future (FoF) calls in H2020 focusing on the modelling and design of production systems.

(3) Engineering Education:

  • Completing the UCD Professional Diploma in University Teaching and Learning in 2014 provided the basis to start investigating the use of active learning approaches in teaching Operations & Supply Chain Management modules.
  • He is part of the UCD Learning Factory Initiative and participates in the wider European Learning Factory Initiatives.
