Biography

William J O'Connor is a Senior Lecturer in the UCD School of Electrical, Electronic and Mechanical Engineering in University College Dublin, National University of Ireland. He obtained a BE in Electrical Engineering in 1972 and a doctorate in 1976 from University College Dublin. The PhD was on magnetic fields and forces for pole geometries with saturable materials. He lectures in Dynamics, Control and Microprocessor Applications. His research interests include control and active vibration damping of elastic mechanical systems (robots, cranes, spacecraft); analysis and design of acoustic devices; development of vibration based sensors, particularly for fluids; numerical modelling methods, particularly TLM (Transmission Line Matrix); analysis and computation of non-linear magnetic fields and forces. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers of Ireland.

Research Interests


Wave-based control of flexible systems
This work applies the idea of mechanical waves to the modelling and control of flexible mechanical systems, such as robot arms, gantry cranes and large space structures. This approach offers new insights and leads to elegant ways of optimally combining position control and active vibration damping in a seamless way. The idea is powerful, flexible, and very general, with many advantages over existing approaches. It is also simple and easy to apply. The application of the work in space has been the topic of two contracts with ESA.


TLM applied to Mechanics
This is about the application of impulse propagation and scattering (an adaptation of TLM, or Transmission Line Matrix, modelling) to solving fundamental equations of Physics and Engineering, especially in Mechanics. TLM is a numerical technique that to date has been applied almost exclusively in electromagnetics. This work develops and evaluates its usefulness as a numerical technique in a wider context. To date we have applied it to, for example, microphone design software (with mechanical-acoustic coupling), modelling non-uniform vibrating plates with natural materials (as in a violin), non-uniform moving cable systems, and fluid mechanics. Simultaneously this work has demanded research into aspects of the fundamentals of the TLM method.

Sensors
Various sensing problems have been studied and new sensors developed. For example:
- Resonant vibration-based sensors for force, density and viscosity measurement.
- Passive and Active infra-red people counting sensors.
- Non-invasive fluid level sensors for sealed containers, such as beer kegs
- Relative humidity sensors for exhaled breath

Magnetic forces and fields with saturation
This work relates to the curious, unsuspected, and fundamentally important role of saturation in force production in electric motors and other magnetic devices. To explore and better understand this area, novel numerical and analytical tools have been developed to model saturation and to analyse fields and forces with saturation.
