My lab is interested in haemostasis, thrombosis, and cellular signalling, with a special focus on the regulation of human blood platelets. We have identified new proteins and characterised new signalling mechanisms in platelets. The aim of our work is to improve current understanding of the control of platelet functions and to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches in thrombotic disease.

Research

Research Interests


Blood platelets play an important role in haemostasis and thrombosis leading to myocardial infarction and stroke. Platelet functions are tightly controlled by intracellular signalling networks. We are investigating these signalling networks in order to understand the regulation of thrombus formation and to identify new diagnostic and therapeutic targets in cardiovascular disease.

Platelets contain a potent endogenous inhibitory system that is activated by prostacyclin and nitric oxide which are released by endothelial cells. The inhibition of platelets is mediated by cyclic nucleotides, cAMP and cGMP. We are investigating the mechanisms of cAMP/cGMP action and we have identified new proteins involved in platelet inhibition such as Rap1GAP2 and RGS18. 

We are also studying the control of platelet granule release and we have discovered synaptotagmin-like proteins 1 and 4 as new regulators of dense granule release.
