I qualified in medicine from University College Dublin (UCD) in 2001. I completed my paediatric training in Ireland and subsequently completed a fellowship in paediatric respiratory medicine at Princess Margaret Hospital, Perth, Australia. I was appointed to my current position as consultant in paediatric respiratory medicine at Our Lady¿s Children¿s Hospital, Crumlin (OLCHC) in March 2012.

I am currently the head of the respiratory department at OLCHC which is the largest tertiary paediatric referral centre in Ireland. Our Respiratory unit at OLCHC currently looks after 150 children with Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and is the largest CF centre in the country. I work with two other paediatric respirologists and a large multidisciplinary team managing the multiple issues involved with paediatric respiratory conditions.

Research Interests

My main research interests include the impact of viruses in acute respiratory illnesses in children, preschool wheezing and cystic fibrosis (CF). In particular my research to date has focused on rhinovirus and wheezing in young children. I am a co-investigator on the CF SHIELD project which is a comprehensive, longitudinal study examining the factors which influence early lung disease in CF. I was awarded an MD thesis from UCD in 2014 on ¿the role of different rhinovirus species in acute respiratory illnesses in children¿.

The respiratory department at OLCHC plays an active role in clinical trials and has a full time research co-ordinator devoted to managing clinical trials. I am a local principal investigator on three international multicentre clinical trials which are currently in operation at the respiratory department in OLCHC.
